Valve put up some nice bug fixes in the latest Preview and Beta updates for the Steam Deck, here's a run over what's new and improved for you.

Some of you may have noticed, at times, the Steam and Quick Access menu would refuse to appear and just instantly vanish. Something that was annoying me a fair bit recently but this latest update should solve it. It's been a problem for quite a while, so good to see it finally solved!

From the October 20th changelog:

General

  • Fixed a case where the Main Menu or the Quick Access Menu would be immediately dismissed after opening.
  • Fix a case where the client would fail to handle some open URL requests.

Desktop Mode

  • Fixed small mode dimensions not restoring correctly if previously sized smaller than the minimum large mode dimensions
  • Fixed resize grip showing sometimes when windows are maximized

Steam Input

  • Fix for new Gyro to Joystick modes not applying Horizontal/Vertical settings, or Axis inversion settings or Rotation Output settings.

Valve also continues expanding the Gyro options for Steam Input from the October 19th changelog:

Steam

  • Modal dialogs now dismiss when you click the background.

Steam Input

  • Fix for PlayStation DualShock 4 gyro sensitivity over Bluetooth for new Gyro Modes.
  • New Gyro Mode: "Gyro to Joystick (Deflection)". This is most appropriate for simulating Steering and Flight Yokes. This mode will eventually replace Gyro "Joystick". It is the last replacement mode for Gyro functionality. It shares the common Gyro Natural angles system.
  • Added "Joystick Power Curve" slider to both "Gyro to Joystick (Camera)" and the new "Gyro to Joystick (Deflection)" modes. This allows you to counteract the response curve that many games employ for better precision.

Since the last stable update, my power button is showing some strange behaviour. Most times I have to press it 5-10 times to turn the deck on or off.

Anyone else having similar problems?

While I like the Gyro options, I wonder why they're working on it so much. I suppose they're trying to encourage developers to take a swing at it using Steam Input.

I'm still waiting for all of these awesome new features to come to stable.

Hard to say. Could be that or some other strategic thing. Or, someone at Valve who uses them might have just said "I am sick of the gyro not working up to potential!"

Not as much as you. Sometimes I press the power button, and it does the chime, but does not boot up, I have to press a second or third time. It seems to happen most when I also dock or undock it while suspended.

I'm also eager to see some updates pushed to stable :)

With the recent interest in gyro and improving the SteamVR experience, maybe we get that dedicated VR headset soon? 🤔

I had an idea that I think would be kind of cool: imagine if they modularize inputs on the Steam Deck. Make every input shaped the same way, attached via magnets and pogo pins. You could swap around a joystick and a touchpad, put the directional pad on the right, or double the number of buttons. It may not be worth the additional cost and complexity but would be very neat.
