New server who dis? Hello again. GamingOnLinux just did a full server migration and so if you’re seeing this, welcome back home, please wipe your feet at the door.

We’ve successfully moved over to AlmaLinux from a nearing EOL CentOS, to ensure that GamingOnLinux can continue operating long into the future on a modern server software platform. That and the server is all clean, shiny and ever-so-slightly better than the previous one. I also took this time to add in some increased security options and an extra backup system too.

I would like to use this moment to give a huge thank you to all our supporters for keeping the lights on! You’re wonderful, beautiful people — the best people. And of course thank you to everyone who joins in commenting on articles and entering the depths of the Forum.

Want to help support GamingOnLinux? See below!

Firstly, the best way is regular support via Patreon. For Patreon, a suggestion is to pledge around the start of a month, as it charges at the beginning of every month. Generally the Patreon is just to have regular funding to keep bringing you the news (and some videos on YouTube - you can also be a YouTube Member!).

All other donations, without any special rewards can be done by:

You can also bookmark and buy games using our affiliate/partner links (and they really do help!):

You can find all the links to support us on our dedicated page any time.

Thank you for continuing to read and support GamingOnLinux!

A quick extra reminder: you can click every single tag on an article, to show a full feed of articles with that tag. Each tag also has an RSS feed attached to it like these examples with Open Source or Distro News or Native Linux or Steam Deck. So you can easily use an RSS feed of what you want, or bookmark specific tags to visit.

Did you also notice the Thunderbird banner recently? We have 1 slot on Patreon to get a little extra funding from a single sponsor and Thunderbird graciously offered to join for a little while. Big thank you to Thunderbird for the support!

Please report general issues and suggestions via this forum.

I was surprised to not see Liberapay in the donation options, and sure enough, your account seems disabled there.

Is there a reason for not accepting donations there anymore ? Fees are lower, also there is no VAT. I'd love to be able to support GoL though Liberapay if that's an option for you.

Suspect Liam will remember more clearly than I, but I think the problem was that LibrePay was largely anonymous, so there no way to assign attribution. So people were paying, but it was impossible to offer benefits like the "Supporter" tag here on the website, or on the Discord.

Sorry, no plans to return to it, too many issues last I tried it and I just don’t like how it functions. With how it works now, it’s really no different to doing a PayPal donation.

Do you think we have a reputation for being "picky"? I noped out of Linode back in the early 2010s when I tested their Slackware images and found they did some iffy things to the init scripts. It was long ago, I forget, but I didn't like it

Yes, if used to having things the Slackware way, everything else is bullshit. Sadly, when Slackware 15 finally came out (I was using -current in anticipation, but no longer as my main squeeze), I discovered that I didn't really want to use it anymore.

Let me explain, I'm not someone that eats distro dog food. I do my own thing and build my own software, versioned and configured the way I want it. Slackware now, with all those frameworks and dependencies to accommodate KDE Plasma, is very difficult to maintain by hand. No dependency tracking on packages is fine, except when you've got thousands of them. Also, I'm not keen on PAM, eudev, elogind etc. in the first place. It's no longer good old Slackware, though he's done a marvelous job of accommodating it all.

I'm not keen on an all or nothing system ("Do a full install!" is now the refrain) either.

My non-gaming system is a custom from-scratch build, that has everything exactly the way I want it. That's pretty hard to beat, but too onerous for all the dependencies (+lib32) needed for gaming to maintain ALL of it yourself.

Arch has all the necessary tools (and necessary evils) for me to do my thing for gaming use. Some of the things they do drive me batty though lol

I'm pretty much stuck with Redshat based distros on servers, if I want to use things like Cpanel though.

Well, you could try to run flatpaked Steam :)

I used to run Slackware, but manually resolving dependencies drove me crazy as a simple things such as installing VLC took hours.

Liam, I'm curious to know where the server is physically located. Is it rented? At your home? In a data center? (Colocated?).

Hey, is there any way to support GoL with cryptocurrency? Preferably Bitcoin/Lightning.

A fancy data centre in Michigan, USA.

Nope, sorry, and no plans for crypto either.

There's no change without some regression...

Despite having the option to keep me logged in enabled, I have to relogin every session on my phone. Unlike with the old system.

Thanks for the answer Liam ! I run a few servers at home, but GoL is at another scale entirely!

That sounds weird, I didn't even have to login again 🤔

Odd, first report I've seen and across three browsers and my mobile I'm not seeing the issue.

I would suggest entirely clearing all cookies and session data, everything for GOL in your browser. Possible something got stuck somewhere. If it still keeps happening send all details to the forum as mentioned in the article.

I'm okay on Android with Firefox, for what is worth (not much, I suspect). Maybe you can share some details and we can help fix.

Congrats on the move. I noticed the Thunderbird ad. People are right, not too intrusive. Doesn't bother me here. What bothers me is that they still did not make it possible to see the sender's email address in the message list. I used to use an addon that doesn't work anymore since they changed the whole shebang once again. So now I am motivated to use mutt instead. Still working on my config. And as soon as I figured it out, bye bye Thunderbird :D

That might be possible! By chance, I'm using the same. And I've got something to experiment: Could you try to access GoL via this link for some days?

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/usercp.php

I did that by chance, and get a not logged in message. When I try to log in from there, I' told I'm already logged in. This doesn't happen on desktop, though, so you could give it a try on mobile.

Nope, still all good here. Android 14 (Pixel 5) using Firefox mobile with uBlock Origin.
