Valve released a fresh Proton Experimental update for Linux desktop / Steam Deck after a few weeks break that brings the usual assorted game fixes.

For the update from November 7th noted as newly playable are:

  • Freefall 3050AD
  • Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition

The other fixes and improvements include:

  • Fixed audio in in Final Fantasy VIII.
  • Fixed Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster crashing after Steam Cloud save updates sets resolution to Non-Deck-Native.
  • Fixed Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster crashing during combat.
  • Fixed The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth crashes that mostly happened when using bombs later in a run.
  • Fixed Aveyond 4: Shadow of the Mist crashing when clicking on Strategy Guide button.
  • Fixed METAL GEAR SOLID 3: Snake Eater - Master Collection Version crashing before the opening cutscene. There's still audio missing.
  • Fixed multiple memory leaks when playing videos in VRchat using AVPro.
  • Fixed Proton 8.0-4 regression that was causing Midnight Club II to crash.
  • Fixed Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart raytracing settings not being exposed on desktops with AMD GPUs.

Changelog can be seen here.

It will just show up in your Steam Downloads as an update for Proton Experimental, as Proton updates just like games do, so keep an eye out for it. Want more info about Steam Play and Proton? Check out my beginner's guide.

How to change your Proton version:

Steam Deck:

  • Pick a game in your Library and head to the little cog icon on the right.
  • Click Properties, then Compatibility on the left.
  • Make sure the tickbox is done, then select Proton Experimental from the dropdown.

On a Linux desktop:

  • Right click a game, go to Properties.
  • Compatibility on the left.
  • Make sure the tickbox is done, then select Proton Experimental from the dropdown.

The one that had a lot of problems was in the X-2, which crashed from the first fight, it was very recurrent
and in X I remember that very sporadically, it crashed when you made a Summon
