We're getting close to the end of 2023 now and so the preparations for the Wine 9.0 release are starting and the Wine 8.20 development release is out now.
From the release notes:
- More DirectMusic implementation.
- Protocol associations exported to the Unix desktop.
- Code cleanups in preparation for code freeze.
- Various bug fixes.
20 bugs were noted to be solved this time including one from 2010 which was for "Register URL protocol handlers under Linux". Other bug fixes mention Max Payne (2001), the UndertaleModTool, Warframe, Neverwinter Nights 2 Complete from GOG and other miscellaneous bug fixes.
With the freeze approaching for Wine 9.0, we can expect more bug fixes to arrive over the next few weeks to get Wine 9.0 ready as the next stable release. Then eventually we should see Proton from Valve upgraded and rebased on the more recent code too.
In case you missed it: CodeWeavers are also hiring for a Wine developer.

QuoteProtocol associations exported to the Unix desktop. That seems... big. This should be for stuff like Spotify and Steam URL, right?
Huh, this might finally make DMM Games work since they use custom uri/protocol for launching games.
