Grand Theft Auto VI is no doubt going to be the absolute biggest release all year when it arrives in 2025, but for now Rockstar Games are only announcing it for consoles. In the press release they only mentioned PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

It's quite likely such a massive game wouldn't really run on the current Steam Deck, but for Desktop Linux we've seen Proton do some ridiculous magic to get even the most intense games working pretty well. By the time GTA VI is released onto PC, no doubt Proton would be able to run it (or soon after release as we see sometimes).

"Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet."

“Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.”

Even though on Linux systems we have Proton, there's a rather big elephant in the corner, waiting to jump out and squash you with SURPRISE. That elephant's name is Anti Cheat. We have no idea what sort of tooling they're going to include with it, if they decide to go for some invasive kernel-based solution, both Steam Deck and Desktop Linux would probably be left out in the cold without a coat. Hopefully this won't happen. There's also the chance it could end up being an Epic Games Store exclusive, making it even more of a nuisance.

When do you think we might see an actual PC release of it? A year later?

Some very impressive lighting going on in that trailer. If you forget the flashy vistas and look at the close shots of the main characters, it is hard to find any flaws. Some major ray traced lighting going there. I wonder how much of that will remain in the final console version. And how much that will hurt PCs when it eventually moves there. A far future problem I suppose.

Yeah, they're absolutely showcasing the lighting.

Having sunk more hours into Vice City than any other GTA, I have to say that seeing the new Ocean Drive almost brings a tear to my eye.

They're trying so, so hard to be Pulp Fiction The Game.

This needs to basically be "Florida Man Simulator" With all that zaniness.

GTA games have notoriously been pretty bad about consuming video ram, which is where I think hand held devices would likely cry. But they can always optimize it to work better in such places. Though in all honesty, it wouldn't surprise me if they screw the PC crowd over and only release on PS5/whatever Xbox.

There is a big chance that GTA6 will not have invasive DRM, because the newest Rockstar games are quite relaxed about DRM.

* RDR - the most invasive DRM ever (console only "DRM";)
* GTA5 - no invasive DRM
* RDR2 - no invasive DRM

I think that with GTA6 we will have the same situation like it was on GTA5 - it will be limited in time console exclusive. The question is how long? GTA5 was released first on PS3/Xbox360, some time later on "next gen" PS4/Xbox1 and only later on PC...

GTA6 is oblivious hardware seller so I'm afraid it will be the same story - so PC edition after PS6/XboXXX... Or maybe perhaps it will be also exclusive tittle for SteamDeck2?

They did that way back in 2008 or so, in the expansions for GTA IV.

So, just wondering because this isn't actually a game I'm likely to play, but if it only comes out on console, can it be played on PC with emulation? Or are all those emulators just for old consoles?

Emulation is currently CURRENT with some systems for example Nintendo Switch has day 1 emulation for many of their games but not all.

All others are trailing.
