Minetest, the popular free and open source voxel game engine, one that can be used to play various different games (like a Minecraft clone) just released version 5.8.0.

There's some pretty big changes to how it works with this release removing Minetest Game from the default install. The idea seems to be a mixture of it not exactly being a good showcase, along with making Minetest itself more of a neutral game engine (and get away from all the Minecraft Clone comments).

Going along with that the main menu went through a redesign, prompting you to install an actual game and a much improved settings menu making it easier to use and more modern. There's also more antialiasing filters, rendering performance improvements, modding improvements and so on.

New settings menu layout style:

The settings menu now actually looks like it's from a modern game — hooray!

There's lots more that's new, improved and changed:

So... the Minecraft clone engine that started as the Minecraft clone game and is clearly designed to do Minecraft-type games is trying to distance themselves from Minecraft clones by not including the Minecraft clone game that gave the Minetest name widespread recognition. Not sure I even realized the Minecraft clone game was separate from Minetest in this way.

I wonder if some shady M$ lawyers were sniffing around here.

Good update! I've been meaning to fire up Minetest again on my Steam Deck to play some more of Jail Escape, so now's as good a time as any!

As for removing Minetest Game, I can kind of understand why, even though I agree with dpanter, above, that it seems odd. Reason being, it seemed to cause a lot of unwarranted criticism about Minetest being under-featured from people who hadn't realised that Minetest Game was basically a demo for the engine and not the be-all-and-end-all for it, and that the real stuff is in the ContentDB.

Don't confuse Minetest (The engine and launcher) with Minetest Game (A minimalistic sample game implemented in that engine which is little more then just creative mode without unlimited resources), with MineClone2 a Mincraft Clone implemented in the Minetest engine.

I'm trying to get it from the PPA repositories listed on their site, but I'm getting an error that there isn't a Release file, and my system disables them by default. So apparently I don't get the new version.

Presumably they haven't updated since Ubuntu (and variants) went to 23.10 in, uh....October.

Edit: No up to date Debian packages in the link they provide either. So on Ubuntu-MATE, I'm pretty much forced to either use Flatpak or stay on the old version, I guess.

I just took a look on my Steam Deck, and the Flatpak hasn't been updated yet, either, unfortunately!

There is also a snap package and it was updated today.

Also there is an AppImage but that is still 5.7.0 version.

That's exactly why we're doing this. It's nothing to do with distancing from Minecraft, it's to make it more obvious that there's more than one game available inside Minetest. It's still possible to get Minetest Game, it's one of the options, it's just no longer predownloaded. The official release blog post goes into more detail about the 'why'.

You're right, looks like 23.10 hadn't been enabled in the build settings. I've built a version for 23.10 now

Works great, thanks.

Now if only the Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup devs would do the same...
