I'm as surprised as you are but The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition just got a brand new update that includes Steam Deck support.

This update brings "Bethesda Game Studios Creations" to the Special Edition, which is a new and updated way to download community-made content in-game. Not only is this for making downloading mods easier, but Bethesda said modders can get verified through it and earn money from their creations. That's right, paid mods are coming back.

On top of that there's now support for "ultrawide PC monitors, including 16:9, 16:10, 21:9 and 32:9 displays", lots of bug fixes, performance improvements, localization fixes and various in-game console improvements.

When it comes to Steam Deck support, they don't exactly say what they improved or added for the announcement. Big studios being as helpful as ever. In the patch notes it says:

Steam Deck Support (PC)

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is now supported on Steam Deck! Whether your adventures take you on the road or just on the couch, enjoy Skyrim wherever you go with Valve’s portable PC handheld.

And then under the PC Only section it just says "FEATURE: Support for Steam Deck."

It's currently at time of writing rated Steam Deck Playable by Valve, which was reviewed back in April 2022. The issues preventing it being fully Verified were needing to manually bring up the on-screen keyboard and a problematic launcher. Testing this update myself on Steam Deck and there was no launcher, it went straight into the game — that's one tick. And when going to name my character, the big Steam Deck overlay keyboard appeared — so another tick. Looks like it can be bumped up to Steam Deck Verified now.

That said, the trouble is, the game is old and doesn't let you change graphics settings in-game. So you're stuck with the defaults they set. If you wish to change them, setting SteamDeck=0 %command% as a launch option in the Properties will bring back the launcher.

Also, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition looks awesome on the Steam Deck OLED. I have so many other games to go through but…it's now calling to me again.

It means when you call them with a problem (yeah, right) they won't say "oh, we don't support that, please install Windows". They'll instead say "thank you for your report, we'll pass that on to the development team". Of course, the result will be the same.

Quoting: TimeFreezeWondering if the GOG version will also get those improvements besides the Creation stuff since thats removed anyways in the GOG release.
I doubt they'll give the GOG version any Deck specific updates, seeing as how it's not expected to be installed on that devoce through said platform, but man it'd be great if they did. Gog version is kinda... Well, it took ages to get it working flawlessly on the Deck. Heroic doesn't install it properly and lead to the launcher not working properly due to missing or misformatted registry keys (intentional bit of copy protection on Bethesda's part which has always annoyed me). And when you get past that, a windows component needs to be installed via protontricks to get dialogue audio working whick took a bit of digging to figure that issue out.
Point is, almost wish I bought the Steam version, on the other hand I really don't want creation club nonsense polluting my game, and DRM free is always preferred when given the option .

Quoting: WorMzyThat's pretty big news -- Bethesda hates Linux.

I guess they LOVE money and staying relevant more than they HATE Loonix. That's what I love about competitive markets -- Baldurs Gate 3 has stolen so many crowns other RPGs feel the need to __COMPETE__ again.

And their owners at Microsoft aren't known for being fond of it, either.

Gonna have to take a back seat and see what Microsoft does now that they acquired StarCraft II, Diablo and Call of Booty

Quoting: Caleb_MIf only they could get SkyUI in their store, I'd come back in a heartbeat. Skyrim on deck sounds awesome. But SkyUI is absolutely required for me to enjoy it.
I wish Fall of the Space Core was on there too... ☄️

I've never played with mods before, so this time I think I might, does anyone have any suggestions to install from the in-game creation studio (or whatever it's called) ...?

Do you people not know you can most likely install the mods from Nexus?? you are not stuck using the in game mod browser

Edit: NVM noticed that mod hasn't been updated but I do know SkyUI is on nexus updated for Skyrim SE

I use Nexus for mods. But even if it was updated for SE directly. I'd still rather use the in-game option or Steam Workshop if I could.

There's an SE workaround for Fall of the Space Core though if anyone is interested at all.

Except skyui is broken at present with the new game version supporting ultrawides. Makes sense. The mod devs will need to update it. Since it's so popular (and really the only gui mod like it) I bet it's already being worked on right now.

That sounds like a better game than Call of Duty!

The gesture is appreciated, but I mainly intend on playing OG Skyrim on my deck if I ever end up playing Skyrim again, since modding games with a mod manager is one of the very small few pain points left on Linux and Steam Workshop mitigates this.
