Some sad news for fans of the fighting game Them's Fightin' Herds, as the developer Mane6 has cancelled the Story Mode and will be ceasing active development on the game.

This was announced on Steam in an update post going over the 5.1.0 version release that pulls in a new Armor Break game mechanic, along with various bug fixes. It also goes over a few details up an upcoming DLC character named Nidra, and teases the final DLC character Baihe. Below all that though, is a short note about the future of the game:

As we look forward to the release of Nidra and Baihe, let's talk about what comes next.
After the Season 1 Pass is complete, we will be ceasing active development on TFH. We will still be able to release small patches to address game-breaking bugs, but no new content will be produced. Unfortunately, that includes Story Mode.

Story Mode has always been an ambitious feature and one we truly desired to implement. We know how much our fans have been looking forward to Story Mode chapters, and we hope you understand how much we looked forward to working on and releasing them.

We are looking for opportunities to release content that has already been produced for Chapter 2, starting with a new stage, "Restricted Section". This stage will be a part of the version 6.0 update alongside Nidra and Baihe.

Always a shame when long-promised features for a game don't happen, and it seems players really aren't pleased with this. Since the announcement went up on November 22nd, the recent user reviews on Steam are now Mostly Negative

You can buy it from Humble Store and Steam.

This is a shame, but unfortunately some of the players of this have been assholes about things that aren't a big deal before. I like the game as it stands & I'm glad that I got the season pass too.

I'm genuinely bad at fighting games, but I do enjoy them. I have Them's Fightin' Herds on my Steam Deck and it's a blast. Great character design, easy to pick up, and outright silly.

It's a shame that the developers won't get to complete extra features, but the game as it stands is excellent.

Played this a lot till the 3.0 update took away the fun.
Was a Pom main (unique puppet character) but, the drastic nerf and super meter build speed made things less fun for me.
Such a strange change gave me a hint something was wrong.
Ontop of changing publishers and releasing a console version which seemed a bit early for that.
Seasonal events stopped too.

Game felt like it still needed a lot of work but what it did do is make one of the best online lobby systems with a unique semi co-op game mode inside it and I wish it would be a standard for all indie fighters.

Big shame it's gonna be left undone and more so cause it likely can't go open source due to not owning the base engine if they even wanted to in the first place.
They said they wouldnt offer the old versions either but I think they owe it to the fans to make legacy versions available for the sake of preservation.

Least they completed the first story chapter which had some Treasure style boss fights but that was just a taate of what the fans were expecting.

Thankfully the community seems to be very restless about it so maybe the game won't be left and forgotten completely.

Very unique fighting game which I guess now will be cheap to try and worth a look at least to learn from what unique things it did accomplish.
