No GodotOS is not another Linux distribution or desktop environment, it's an open source fake operating system interface made in Godot Engine, designed to push the limits of UI design in Godot. It's also just really cool.

From the project page:

Welcome to GodotOS, an operating system interface created entirely in Godot! Browse folders, edit text files, view images, play games, and more in one cohesive polished interface that can even be used on the web!

GodotOS is more of a toy than a serious project. It's meant to push the limits on UI design in Godot while creating a desktop that is minimalist, distraction-free, and aesthetically pleasing.

Aside from that, GodotOS is also meant to be a hub for small games and experiences that can easily be bundled in.

If you have a small game / experience you want to add into it, they're also accepting contributions. I love crazy experimental stuff like this, especially when it's open source (AGPL-3.0 license), because it allows people to learn from it and UI design is something that can be tricky to get right in any game engine — so perhaps game devs from all over might want to take a look at this.

I just thought it was really cool and thought you might think so too.

Check it out on itch.io and find the source code on GitHub.

Heck, it is even has a trailer:

We broke the term "operating system".

My first throuhts were, it has a kind of KDE Plasma feel to it, especially the font choice.
Then later on it turns out the dev was using KDE Plasma, so probably was influenced by that

It's pretty cool, I love the instant feedback on everything. I feel that's something that all desktops are missing out on (but much of it is probably the applications themselves, alas)

So... can you execute godot apps/games inside the GodotOS?
Can GodotOS run GodotOS?

It would be cool if someone could make it.

That's very impressive. They can open image file, a thing that Windows 11 can't do natively .

Now I wonder if someone will try to use it against scammers?
Looks like a daily driver to me!

another thing i hope happens in the future is that we get an "big picture" ish interface to launch godot games and that a lot of games start using custom godot logo just like in the n64 days

Would be hilarious to design the UI to look like Windows. Give remote control to the online scammer. When they move their mouse to the start button, the button runs away or just avoids the mouse pointer. Or as they scroll the mouse the background infinitely scrolls instead of the mouse pointer so it makes the brain perceive movement but the mouse pointer never gets close to the start button. Imagine the scammer just swiping their mouse off their desk trying to reach the start button.

I love the idea of this being embedded into a computer in an Immersive Sim type game.

While this is a fun tech demo, WMan22 makes a fantastic point and we should not rush to dismiss this as a total novelty:

I love the idea of this being embedded into a computer in an Immersive Sim type game.

If anyone has played "Doki Doki Literature Club! Plus", they do exactly this. The original version of the game uses renPy and expects you to inspect the game files by browsing local files. However DDLC Plus uses Unity, which has a much different file structure (even if the original DDLC mocked a lot of the files for meta purposes), and also this remake targets consoles which you cannot browse local files on (likewise for the Steam Deck in Game Mode).

To get around this, the developers created a mock OS-like interface (that is also partially woven into the story), very similar to GodotOS. Having something like GodotOS could be a very cool gameplay element. This GodotOS piece could inspire some creativity!
