The KDE team are currently running a funding campaign to help bring in more monies to support Plasma desktop development, and thankfully well ahead of the Plasma 6 release they've managed to hit the initial goal.
With the first two goals of getting 550 paying members hit, they've managed to pull in a good amount of funding:
Thanks to your generosity, we now have the funds to take on the launch of Plasma 6 and all the challenges that come with it, as well as count on enough funds to commission artwork and designs from professional artists, ensuring new and beautiful wallpapers, websites, logos, and icons for Plasma 6's first year of life.
However, they're hoping to add another 100 members as their stretch-goal on their funding:
Our second stretch goal aims to add 100 more members and give us the means to fund the upkeep of all the infrastructure and resources for developers and external communications. This covers a wide range of things, from paying the rent for the servers used for development and internal communication among community members, to designing and maintaining public websites, forums, communication with the media, creating merchandise, promotion at non-FLOSS events, and more. Our deadline for this second stretch goal is the launch date of Plasma 6 on February 28, 2024.
A reminder on the rest of the Plasma 6 roadmap:
- 10 January 2024: Release Candidate 1
- 31 January 2024: Release Candidate 2
- 21 February 2024: Private Tarball Release
- 28 February 2024: Public Release
As far as Plasma 6 goes, I'm hoping its release will be the Wayland milestone for me and I switch to it for regular use on my desktop. Wayland has been good on the laptop for at least a year, but some unpleasant things were on the desktop. I'm hoping I can say goodbye to X11 with Plasma 6.
