Riot Games cutting 11% of staff (about 530 people)

By -

Ouch. Yet another developer is getting rid of staff in a move to cut some costs and this time it's Riot Games, who will be waving goodbye to 11% of their people. That's 530 people who will lose their jobs and "the biggest impact to teams outside of core development".

In the blog post the Riot CEO, Dylan Jadeja, mentioned how they took on too many "big bets across the company" and they have "too many things underway" and some just aren't paying off causing costs to grow and become "unsustainable" leaving Riot "no room for experimentation or failure".

Riot will be supporting staff being cut with a minimum of 6 months salary, a cash bonus based on a performance target, health benefits, a personal laptop if they need one and more. Looks like they have a reasonable support system in place at least.

All of this doesn't mean much for Linux and Steam Deck gaming of course, since Riot Games don't actually support Linux. Still, it's interesting industry news to see just how many developers are cutting back. Because there has been a lot of this across the industry and it appears no one is safe.

Now I'll take this opportunity to remind you that Riot Games will be soon adding Vanguard into League of Legends, so it will be broken on Linux / Steam Deck.

too many "big bets across the company"
of course, it's great to take big bets, as long as others (11%) pay the bill.

moreover it's pretty obvious that if I have many projects going on I need to reduce the workforce. A company wants to hire only when there is no job to do.

"We could reallocate the people on experimental projects that aren't paying off to new experimental projects and then we have a workforce that has the lessons learned from the prior experiments, but it's much easier to layoff people and have to onboard a bunch of new people, surely"

I guess this aren't the staff that are working on the Riot MMORPG.

Are you saying those people shouldn't have been hired in the first place? That's weird. Also, can't go back in time.

That's really big. You could almost have kept them on and given them a 6-month notice instead. But I guess if Riot is going to completely drop projects, no reason to have those people sit around and do nothing. Might as well sit at home and do nothing. You know some will treat this as a big vacation. That's their own responsibility and choice of course. Maybe we'll see some more indie projects started.

I think you missed a bit of sarcasm there.

Perhaps you're right in this case, however people on this forum are more often completely serious and committed to this disposition.
