The new Skate from EA will be coming to Steam

By -

The next-generation Skate is now confirmed to getting a PC release on Steam, so thankfully you won't have to deal with the EA App directly. It was already confirmed some time ago to be coming to PC (a first for the series), but confirmation that it will be on Steam means it should be nice and smooth to get running on Desktop Linux and Steam Deck.

News about it coming to Steam though only appeared recently in the below video from December 21st, which it seems went largely unnoticed until recently when the team also posted about it on X (formerly Twitter) to confirm it there as well with a clip from the longer video.

Also announced in the video is that it will have cross-platform and cross-progression play, good news for players (or if you have friends) across multiple platforms.

Technically Skate 4, it's just going to be called Skate. (the dot is included). It will be free to play at release, so I'll likely give it a go and report back on what compatibility to expect for Linux / Steam Deck.

We do have a few skating games on PC nowadays including Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, Session: Skate Sim, Skater XL but no doubt many will be looking forward to skate.

Hm, i might be blind, but i don't see any indication, that the Steam version gets spared from the horrible EA App bullshit?
I mean, it's possible, some games are indeed free of this nonsense, but the vast majority of EA games released on steam still have the EA App, don't they?

No word on that yet and likely won't know until closer, the point is as always: be on Steam is just easier for everyone and the place people generally expect to be able to buy their PC games.

Remember HeroicLauncher Meme ?

Maybe they can get it done in time?

I played the last playtest and have invitation for the next, this month. I can tell you better late this month, but it will not release this year almost certainly.

Indeed, there are a few exceptions like Jedi Fallen Order (where the last patch removed the EA app requirement if you launch the executable directly), but this was never officially advertised. You should expect Steam to launch (and require) the EA app for all other games by default.

EA app isn't DRM-free (just like Ubisoft Connect). This means Heroic developers would have to bypass it somehow, which is unlikely to happen for many reasons.

What does DRM mean other than the game, launcher and Webservers talk with one another to see if you own the game and are allowed to start it?
It does not have to be bypassed, as that would be piracy, it has to be replicated like login and downloading.
Never do anything the original wouldn't do or you are getting into trouble with their owners, like ea in this case.

Replicating a proprietary and potentially encrypted communication protocol that could change any time is a horrible task. Imagine you spend weeks on it, it works, news gets out and they simply roll out some minor changes that break everything, again and again. They want us to use their launchers because they profit from them.

Could happen but i don't think so. After the horrible messes ive seen in applications and games quality isn't the first priority. As long as the code works, it's fine. I don't think it is worth the effort to keep changing both games & launcher just to mess with third party launchers.
Also, the income is based on games sold and who cares about the launcher?
Glad to see the giants doing battle for my dollar.

As usually I'll hold off my optimism until I see exactly what the product is.

Net negatives will be if they do why Tony Hawk did at launch
- DRM
- No play offline

You could probably just pick up Skate 3 used for 10 bucks and run it in the PlayStation 3 emulator or whatever too if this doesn't pan out.

I'll buy in if they don't sell out and they actually respect their customers, I held off the TonyHawk for a while, then played it a lot and now it doesn't really have the same appeal -- the specials sound is annoying, I'm stuck only playing 1 character unless I just can't figure it out and the progression system of unlocking boards and tricks is tedious and not exciting. It was a great upgrade from Tony Hawk HD and the originals overall but I think as the Skate series has demonstrated this genre of game has room for new winners and improvements.

I tried those other party skate games Skate XL and man did I hate it. With some luck this will be my go-to if they bake it right.
