Valve has released the latest most-played list for Steam Deck for January 2024 and as expected, Palworld has managed to jump right near the top.

These lists always amaze me because it shows just how ridiculously versatile the Steam Deck is from massive AAA games to small indie games — there really is something for everyone. Also shows how amazing SteamOS Linux and Proton are to be able to run them all.

Sorted by hours played from top to bottom here are the winners for players on Steam Deck through January 2024:

What have you been playing mostly over the last month?

Be sure to also check out my recent Steam Deck Verified picks.

Checking my 2024 list so far, 40 out of the 54 games I've played so far this year have been emulated titles, so aside from regular stuff like Stardew Valley (Native Linux) and Super Bomberman R 2 (Proton), I mostly haven't been playing anything recent, or really many PC games at all!

That said, highlights have been kicking off the New Year with Bomberman (NES), getting nostalgic about Darkwing Duck (NES), finally completing Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (Nintendo 64) (a game which I constantly had problems getting through over the course of many many years, because every time I've tried to play through it, random nonsense would come up and prevent me from finishing it), re-playing the charming and weird Star Parodier (PC Engine Super CD-ROM²), reclaiming all my base in Zero Wing (Mega Drive), getting hooked on Dr. Mario (NES) all over again, and revisiting the original boomer-shooter, Space Invaders (Arcade).

Out of curiosity, what emulators do you use? RetroArch?

In some form or another, usually it's that, yes. The only exception I typically make is for Dolphin, because the standalone version is so good, but I haven't used it lately.

On my Entroware Orion i5, GPD Win Max 2021, and GPD MicroPC (laptop/handheld/palmtop respectively, all running Mint Xfce) I use the RetroArch Flatpak, which also makes it easy to set up menu entries for individual games if I want to. On the Steam Deck I use the wonderful RetroDECK. That's all of the x86 machines.

Then over on the ARM side, on my Anbernic RG Nano I've got DrUm78's custom version of FunKey-OS (this is the only emulation-handheld I've got where RetroArch isn't used by the OS - I didn't feel the need to fuss with setting up PicoArch cores, in the end), my Anbernic RG351MP runs AmberELEC, and last but not least my Retroflag GPi Case runs Sliver X's GPi Zero.

... I might have a bit of a portables addiction. (And I need to update my profile-page hardware picture and list again, since I revived the GPi Case a couple of days after editing it to its current state.)

I've been playing Opus Magnum. Wanted to use the Deck, but the controls don't work out for larger machines/programs.
