Thomas "GloriousEggroll" Crider has released the latest GE-Proton 9-2 with a bunch of upgrades, plus some news about the Unified Linux Wine Game Launcher.
As a reminder: GE-Proton is a community-built version of Proton, not supported by Valve, that often has fixes Valve can't distribute (sometimes for legal reasons, other times for more QA testing time). For GE-Proton 9-2 the changes are:
- wine updated to latest bleeding edge.
- dxvk updated to latest git.
- vkd3d-proton updated to latest git.
- dxvk-nvapi updated to latest git.
- upstream proton changes added.
- upstream steamclient changes added.
- ULWGL-protonfixes renamed to umu-protonfixes per upstream project.
- previous noted wmv playback regression appears to be fixed now -- working with ultimate marvel vs capcom 3 again.

ULWGL (Unified Linux Wine Game Launcher) as noted above has now been renamed to umu. What is it? A unified launcher for windows games on linux. It is essentially a copy of the Steam Linux Runtime/Steam Runtime Tools that Valve uses for proton, with some modifications made so that it can be used outside of Steam. So it's not a launcher in the sense of Heroic or Lutris, but a tool used by other launchers to properly run Proton outside of Steam.
About the renaming posting on Mastodon they said:
So, we've decided on "umu" as the rename for ULWGL.
umu "oo-moo" -- A chamber used for baking or heating.
It fits the theme of pressure-vessel, steam, etc, and it's short, easy to say in a conversation, (and jokingly uwu).

umu
It's an archaic Japanese interjection meaning 'yea', 'uh huh'. In modern Japanese fiction it's used similar to いい (ii) in that it can be used as an affirmative or positive ("Yes, that's good"), noncommittally or resignedly ("fine, alright") or dismissively ("Enough!")
"Do you want to play shougi"?
"Umu, I sure do! Where shall we play?"
Quoting: voytrekkIs this something that we should be using in Lutris now? GE hasn't released a Wine-GE-9.x yet.Wine-GE is pretty much no longer a thing with GE-Proton and umu together.

That would be my question, too.
Is GE-Proton with UGW... umu the replacement for Wine-GE now when using Lutris?

Looks like the Lutris implementation of ULWGL/umu is still in the oven:
