Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition has officially arrived on Steam, and thankfully it does work on Linux Desktop / Steam Deck.

In the Steam release announcement the developers noted "We will continue to make optimizations to improve compatibility on handheld PC gaming devices" so hopefully the experience on Steam Deck will get improvements in that. Additionally they're working on bringing AMD FSR 3 including Frame Generation in a future update.

As reported earlier by me, Valve released updates to both Proton Experimental and Proton Hotfix recently although there was no announcement on Proton Hotfix changes just yet, we can now see that at least on Steam Deck that Valve picked Proton Hotfix by default. So Proton Hotfix likely has some adjustments in it needed for the best experience.

Steam Deck shots provided by one of our Discord moderators, running it on the default settings (click to enlarge):

Good to see another fresh release working thanks to Proton! Early areas at least seem to give around 30FPS, but as we know from games this big, later areas may bring performance down just like the first game that can cause some issues.

I just spent a couple hours in game, and man ........ the visual quality. Stunning puts it mildly. It's kind of crazy that I thought the original Horizon had the best visual quality I'd ever seen and now the only thing to take that crown is this. Nothing else comes close that I've seen. I was also worried about performance, but I'm getting constant 60+ fps which is perfect for me. I'm on:

Ryzen 7 5800x
Radeon RX 6800 XT
32g ram
3440x1440
all settings on "high" in game
no upscaling/frame gen/etc
all the garbage stuff like chromatic aberration turned off (not sure if this helps perf at all?)

Pretty wonderful what these devs have accomplished. Now to get out of the tutorial mode and start exploring the world! I know a lot of people were turned off by the open world of the first game, but I absolutely loved it. Completely almost every single thing there was to do. I hope I plan on doing the same here!

I can't wait to ply this, but I have so many other titles to play first, including the first one. Oh well, at least I'll get to play it *after* it gets optimized :)

Anyone knows how well the busier sections perform?

Running great in 4K on 6800 XT so far!

I'll wait for some discount. I liked the first one, but I'm not willing to spend 60 bucks for that at the moment. Have enough other games to play for now which wait to be played for years now :D.

Wonderful game, which flawlessly works on my, admittedly beefy, rig. I'm just happy I don't have to buy a PS these days to experience games like this.

After a couple, I thought I might want to try to stream it to my deck and from there output to my TV, but boy, it's a mess.
With Steam Remote Play my controller won't work in the game. With Sunshine, which I've tried for the first time, Resolution is messed up, Controller connection is flaky at best - for whatever reason - and quality isn't up to par.

If Valve had to fix two things with the deck it would be Remote Play and those god damn download speeds when transferring data from my main PC to the deck - I gave up and am installing it directly on the deck now.

But, again, wonderful game.

The first game I played on the Deck using Chiaki. A great game, a nice take on a little stale open world genre.

I'm going to wait and see if it get released on GOG like HZD, still haven't finished HZD so I don't need to get it for now anyway

Didn't like the first game. Tried to start it 3 times with different mindset, but the gameplay was dull and characters super bland and uninteresting. gameplay was kinda meh also like tomb raider games. Environment was super well done though. And thats just me i guess. So i wont buy it. Maybe when its on big sale later this year or next year.

Good to see day 1 working big titles on Linux though!
Happy for those who want to play this!

PS owners are really upset that their precious exclusives are now available to the PC Master Race®. I was dubious about this until I saw it with my own eyes, when I mentioned it while talking to one of those dirty peasants.

Nice to see such a heavy game working at 30fps on the Deck.

I played the first one to nearly 100% at 120 hrs, and I have put several hours into this new one, and I think she looks the same. I mean I know it's been years since I saw her, but she seems totally fine.

If you look at side by sides... to quote both my friend and brother (whom I sent the image to separately) 'they look like a younger Slug' (Slug in this case being a dude we've known for a long time.) They definitely look a lot different.

That looks to me more like a difference in the shots than a difference in the face itself. Like, the impression was different, but then when I looked at like the nose, or the eyebrows or stuff, I realized it was pretty much the same. The difference is more in the expression, in the amount of forehead you're seeing (because the 2017 pics were cropped and/or had headgear) and so on.

That's simply increased fidelity on her face. More polygons means more definition to how they want the character to look. Look at the ears, the left two you can clearly see the polygons that make up the ears while the right it's almost indistinguishable, though it's not helped by the '21 image being blurry. The most noticeable difference in the nose but as others have said I think that has more to do with the way lighting is improved in a more recent title.

The right looks more human because they have more fidelity to make her look more human. If that's your complain I don't know what to tell you.

Uhm... she doesn't look more human on the right, she looks more like a dude. Like I know a dude who looked like that when he was younger. The one on the left looks like the model they hired to create the character the first time around. There are tons of examples of this 'uglification' of female characters all over the internet. Not sure what to tell you, if you can't see it. Hell, I don't even see that many attractive females in my day to day, but the YouTube shorts certainly have thumbnails of them all the time.

Aloy in the first game looked perfectly fine, the one in the second one looks like she put on weight, had her jaw squared off, and made to look more manly.

There are a lot of the 'twitter mob' complaining about Stellar Blade, and how unrealistic the protagonist is. But she's created after a Korean model... that very much looks just like the character. Every example I've seen of the original model, and the character in game of recent games (Like Spider-Man 2) they 'uglify' her. That actually takes more effort than to just scan her face and use it as-is.

Man, I've waited for this game for years.

Very cool to see an "AAA" game launching just fine on PC : decent performance (runs smoothly on a 6-year old rig), no microtransactions, no invasive DRM or kernel-level anti-cheat, good story/graphics, and an overall great experience with Proton.

I'm having a blast with it !

same here! I just did the big fight at barren light (not a spoiler) and man alive, the production value is so high! It's really like playing a scene from a movie. Loved it.

I also have to LOLOLOL so loud at all the face stuff. Cmon people, it's so absurd, I can barely tell if you're joking or not.
