KONAMI are continuing to put out the fires from the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 1 release on Steam, with v1.5.0 out now for MGS 1, 2 and 3. It's nice to see they do keep improving them, rather than just leaving them in the state they were. Now they should be much more playable than before.

The changes below are for MGS 1:

  • Fixed an issue in which certain cutscenes stopped playing.
  • Fixed an issue in which analog input did not work as intended.
  • Removed the "Download" option from the main menu.
  • Changed it so that Window Mode settings cannot be altered on Steam Deck.
  • Fixed some other minor issues.

Changes for MGS 2:

  • Added pause menu - Audio settings, screen settings, the online manual, resetting the game, and returning to the main menu can now be accessed via the pause menu.
  • Fixed a portion of in-game text.
  • Added Steam Input support.
  • Fixed some other minor issues.

And the changes for MGS 3:

  • Added "ADDITIONAL SETTINGS" feature - Audio options, screen options, mouse sensitivity options, the online manual, and returning to the main menu can be accessed via "ADDITIONAL SETTINGS" within the Options menu.
  • Added "MOUSE SENSITIVITY" options - Mouse sensitivity can be adjusted via the Additional Settings menu.
  • Fixed an issue where a portion of character textures were displayed at a low resolution.
  • Fixed a portion of in-game text.
  • Added Steam Input support.
  • Fixed an issue where inputs via the keyboard were registered in-game even while the Alt key was held down.
  • Fixed some other minor issues.

One issue that did come was analog input in MGS 1 not working as intended, which they say they have also now fixed. However, you may need to verify the game files to ensure you've got the correct controller configuration available. More info on ensuring you've got the right config in this Steam post.

Now if only Konami could give the same kind of love to some of their other games...

For example, they literally abandoned GetsuFumaDen Undying Moon even though it clearly has missing content (the game has various placeholders for multiple weapon types, characters, and stages), disappeared from the official Discord server, released a physical Switch edition of the game a year after abandoning it, then went radio silent again after that.

Still not working. Tested on desktop and Deck, it just mimics the D-pad, not actual analog input. An easy way to check it is going to first person view.
I will buy this game when it will be remastered with a quality as good as Tomb Raider I-II-II remasters.
For the moment, gaming experience MGS1 is better with PS1 Duckstation emulator.

Those pictures on the Steam Store are terrible.

In 2024, it should be trivial to do proper anti-aliasing at a resolution that is not insanely low-res.

And for that matter, living in the age of AI, it should be trivial to AI upscale all the textures in the game or at the very least support modders so that they can trivially re-texture it.

Did they ever __NOT__ add Denuvo? Because memory is fuzzy but that was absolutely nogo for me. I ain't buying that trash.

This particular one's just an emulated PlayStation title. To be honest, even just multiplying the internal resolution and turning on geometry-correction would've made it look worlds better - that's what I do by default when emulating any PSX game, since I've found that trying to mess with anything else graphics-wise tends to break things more often than not.

All of that to say, if they had issues with fancier upscaling breaking stuff, that's the baseline under emulation that usually doesn't break things, and they should've used it.

Sadly, yes. Every version of MGS1 in this collection are emulated PSX versions. The PAL voiceover versions at 25fps, NTSC Jap and US, included Integral.
Do the analog controls actually work on MGS 2 and 3?

Because last time I tried emulating them, the problem was the game expects DualShock2 analog controls e.g lightly pressing square would ready the weapon and then a further, stronger press would fire. I never could get this to work via emulated controllers. How does this collection handle those controls?

Yes, I am sure.

The Master Collection version of MGS1 was made by M2 (MGS2 and MGS3 in this package were handled by other studios - there's a reason the only properly-working parts at launch were the ones M2 handled), a company which entirely specialises in emulated re-releases; They're probably best known for the Sega Ages series, but they also did stuff like some of the official mini-consoles of recent years, and parts of the non-Switch ports of Super Bomberman R.

As an aside, it even includes a feature to emulate Psycho Mantis reading particular saves for other Konami PlayStation releases from the emulated memory-card, which you otherwise wouldn't see in a re-release like this. That's M2's thing - they tend to go out of their way to include details like that.

I combed the Steam Forums a little couldn't get a "yes" there -- maybe people have been speculating based on the trend to shoe-horn launchers and DRM into games post-launch -- like what happened with the Bioshock series IIUC.

Of course, MGS1 can still be bought for PS1 and simply emulated, and I think there may be a team working on a decompiled version of it too -- which honestly would seem to be the real definitive edition.

It's been a long time since I've beat MGS1, but man did I enjoy the story. It's definitely worthy of preservation and upgrades.

I've still got all of my old PlayStation discs and I revisited it a couple of years ago under emulation - it's still just as great as it ever was, and it doesn't need to be meddled with, which is always good to see. Go back and play it again now - you won't regret it.

Honestly, from my perspective they really could've gotten away with a simple emulated re-release with simple internal-resolution upscaling for a tenner, and I'd've grabbed it on day one. It shouldn't've been possible to mess it up!

HAHAHAHA!

Honestly, I'm largely indifferent towards Bomberman Act:Zero (though I do highly recommend that anyone who doesn't know what happened with that should watch this retrospective ). I think the saddest thing, aside from its terrible bleakness and cheaply-made nature (its soundscape is entirely crappy-horror-movie stock screams and effects, and it's honestly bizarre to remember that it was intended as a serious effort meant to be taken oh-so-seriously), is that it was the game that put an end to Hudson Soft.

It's vanishingly rare for a series to survive a buyout, and I'm just glad that this was one of those rare occasions and that Konami and the ex-Hudson staff who remain there saw the value in doing so.
