OpenRCT2 continues to keep the dream of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 alive, with a new release v0.4.9 now available adding in some new features and plenty of bug fixes. One of my favourites open source projects!

This new release adds in Ukrainian language support, RCT1 beta terrains, new colours for people's clothing when they spawn, a mechanism to allow building partly underground, various fixes to RCT1 features, an option to control hidden scenery, some UI fixes and more that can be seen in the changelog.

Compared with the original game here's some of what OpenRCT2 features:

  • User Interface theming.
  • Increased limits.
  • Fast-forwarding gameplay.
  • Multiplayer support.
  • Multilingual. Improved translations.
  • OpenGL hardware rendering.
  • Various fixes and improvements for bugs in the original game.
  • Native support for Linux and macOS.
  • Added hacks and cheats.
  • Auto-saving and giant screenshots.
  • Performance improvements.

You need the data files from the original game to actually play it. You can buy a copy for that from GOG or Steam. See more on the OpenRCT2 website.

Want a quick and easy way to run it on Linux? It's available as a Flatpak.
