Working with RPCS3 for PlayStation 3 emulation should now be a whole lot easier on the likes of the Steam Deck, other handhelds and for just gamepad users with the latest update.

Announced by the RPCS3 team on the official X account, which includes a screenshot from this merge request that notes these changes:

  • Allows to use the game pad to navigate the main window
  • This spawns a thread that uses the configured pad for player 1 to generate mouse and keyboard events.
  • The thread is stopped when we go ingame and reactivated when we stop the game.
  • Has two options in the gui settings for now:
    • Enable pad navigation (uses the pad to navigate the GUI while the game isn't running)
    • Allow global pad navigation (prevents you from losing pad input if RPCS3 isn't the active window)
  • The input is currently hardcoded to generate:
    • D-pad -> Arrow keys
    • Cross -> Enter
    • Circle -> ESC
    • Square -> Back
    • Triangle -> Tab
    • Left stick -> Mouse movement
    • Right stick Left/Right -> Horizontal mouse wheel
    • Right stick Up/Down -> Vertical mouse wheel
    • L1 -> Left click
    • R1 -> Right click
    • L2 -> Boost Mode = faster mouse movement

Another change they also implemented recently includes support for playing with midi drums, so you can play games like Rock Band 3 without a a midi pro adaptor. Sounds useful for even better and easier game preservation.

They also recently put up an overview video going over two years of progress on this open source emulator:

I recommend Initial D Extreme Stage for the PS3. Since we haven't gotten a home port ever since. Here's some gameplay. It's really cool & the series has great music.
