Valve have released another Beta version of Proton 9.0, what will become the next main stable version of Proton on the path to getting as many games running as possible on Linux Desktop / Steam Deck.

The changes in Proton 9.0 (Beta16) are listed below.

  • Fixed Proton 9.0 regressions:
    • Command & Conquer Red Alert is playable again.
    • Carmageddon: Max Damage is playable again.
    • Fixed Risk of Rain 2 being unable to start a multiplayer lobby.
    • DayZ is able to connect to servers again.
    • The Last Of Us Part I no longer drops FPS when using mouse.
    • Trove no longer crashes when going through inventory.
  • Fixed new prefix failing to initialize on filesystem that do not support copy_file_range systemcall.
  • Added support for Steamworks SDK 1.59.

To be fair, this is the beta of the new upcoming version. It would be a bigger problem if new point releases of the stable version showed a lot of that. Well, for all I know maybe they do.

By its very nature, Wine always has and always will need to play catch-up. It really is just a matter of how long it takes until it catches up.

Back in the day, if a game broke and it wasn't popular enough, it might sit for years without working again. At least for the time being, games are usually fixed within hours or days instead of months or years.

Good see Command & Conquer Red Alert working again. I have been playing C&C Red Alert (REMASTERED VERSION) and I have to go back a couple version of Proton to be able to play it at all.

DayZ looking good these days. Are they still updating it? does it run/play well or still got bad issues that it had.
