Well well well, what do we have here then? A bunch of developers seem to have joined up for something called The Triple-i Initiative that could be quite exciting.

This was stealthily teased today that I spotted the Vampire Survivor account on X posting about, with nothing other than an eyes emoji pointing to The Triple-i Initiative website. The website also doesn't really give much away either noting simply that it's:

A mysterious teasing page by the studios behind...

Darkest Dungeon, Risk of Rain, Slay the Spire, Vampire Survivors, V Rising & many others

With a countdown timer to a new announcement due in just over 16 days.

Doing a bit of digging on X there really is a lot of developers and publishers involved in this including others you may recognise like Evil Empire (prev worked on Dead Cells), Fellow Traveller (publisher), Humble Games (publisher), Fireshine Games (publisher), Dotemu (Streets of Rage 4), Thunder Lotus (Spiritfarer), Thorium (UnderMine), Pathea Games (My Time at Sandrock), Matt Dabrowski (Streets of Rogue) and the list goes on and on…

And then there's the new official X account for The Triple-i Initiative that posted how this has been "In the works for months, coming to you in days.". Curious.

Hmm. What could this be? A game that they're all part of somehow? A special indie game publisher? A game bundle? A new marketing push for indie games but not specifically a publisher? Something else entirely? A few months isn't a lot of time to prepare a new game, especially with so many involved, so I doubt it's that.

Over to you in the comments, what do you think will be announced? Go on, give it your best shot.

I would still be a grumpy git about it. I'm really not a fan of most crossovers these days, I'm very burnt-out on them.

Besides, your list didn't include current Bomberman developer Hexa Drive (who are an indie studio) or Konami (who I don't think we could say are). You're not about to tell me they're in on this too, are you?
I know your really waiting for the Darkwing Duck and Shadow The Hedgehog crossover......

I am the emo that sulks in the night........ If I had a cape I would be cooler than ice....... I am Shadow The Hedgehog!!!.........

After some more consideration, focusing on the name/wording ("initiative") and the (short) time of stated preparations, I think it might be some kind of certification process that will slap "III" badge on the games considered to be "AAA" quality but made by indie developers, as a way of distinguishing them from the indie crowd (and it became a crowdy space indeed).

Triple I, aka III (from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AAA_(video_game_industry) :
QuoteThe similar construction "III" (Triple-I) has also been used to describe high-production-value games in the indie game industry.
So it's basically a bunch of indie devs and publishers joining forces for marketing purposes. In craft beer your have the Independent Craft Brewer seal: https://www.brewersassociation.org/independent-craft-brewer-seal/

Its gonna be the same sort of thing, a way to clearly label members of the Triple-I Initiative as "Indie". They're gonna have to settle on what's "Indie" tho. And since it's just a marketing scheme (ie., advertising), it really won't affect most consumers other than push other III members into your spam and in-game ads.

I wouldn't get too excited.

Quoting: ticktokTriple-I definitely refers to "higher budget indie games" as opposed to triple-A.
Interestingly the term III and Triple-I were just added to the Triple-A Wikipedia page a few months ago.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AAA_(video_game_industry)

So I'm guessing it's a super-studio that will allow the various indie studios to collaborate on a bigger budget game while maintaining their individual indie-ness.

If that's what it is, I hope that it works out for them. Personally I see "AAA" as a big warning-sign to stay away because it won't be to my tastes, so I'm not sure how labelling indie titles similarly would appear to my mind...

I'm pretty sure the announcement is going to be the launch of 'Broken Roads,' an Australian CRPG.

If you go to their Twitter page - https://twitter.com/BrokenRoadsGame/status/1767593498604183751?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

It shows the three i's superimposed over their box art, they said they would launch the game in early 24 (after pushing the release date back from Nov of 23) and it plays on Linux. Could be a fake out but I'll be very surprised if that's not the news.

The same style of images has been done for this announcement by various developers and publishers.

Honestly, that would probably be both awesome and funny.

It's probably even been done before in fanfiction. Doggone it, now I'm curious! Off I go to various fanfic sites.
