That's all folks. EA anticheat has now been added into Battlefield V, so it's the end of being able to play it on Steam Deck and other Linux systems.
This joins the likes of Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2: Deluxe Edition, EA SPORTS FC 24, EA SPORTS FIFA 23, Battlefield 2042 and Madden NFL 24 that all have EA's own homegrown anti-cheat that make them simply unplayable on systems running Linux.
Now if you try to run it, you'll be greeted with an error. A shame to see a game that's multiple years old get broken like this and no doubt EA will continue to use their own EA anticheat in future online games. Battlefield 1 is still okay, and Apex Legends is also still running but perhaps it's only a matter of time before EA force it onto those too?
Hopefully at some point Valve can find a way to work with EA on this, to get it somehow working with Proton like we've seen support for Easy Anti-Cheat, BattleEye, GameGuard and others.
What are some alternatives you can recommend for readers now looking to go elsewhere?

Going by forum posts elsewhere, seems like it's now broken on Windows too, for some people. No doubt there'll be a dodgy solution out there at some point, that people who want to play the game legally will be forced to use.

I don't think that's the intent behind this. In my humble opinion, the issue here is money.
If EA uses its own anticheat, there's not anticheat to buy from third parties so it means more money for the stakeholders.
This causes the inconvenience of screwing Linux users, but do you really think they care a single bit about us?
This is EA, people. It's been very long since they were some sort of decent developer. So long many probably weren't even born.

They've never made the sort of games I would ever want to buy. I don't think they've made anything even vaguely interesting to me since the era of the Commodore 64, and even then I've literally never bought an EA game.

Oh, I was wondering all the time why they don't enable it in the backend, like it's possible for the other games. but EA AntiCheat is not EAC (doh!).

I used to play a decent amount of BFV. I bought it again on steam late last year (far easier than Origin was and I got that one for free), wonder if I can still return it. What a waste.
As for alternatives, the closest battlefield alternative is BattleBit Remastered. Good fun game.
I also absolutely adore Red Orchestra 2, though it's a bit more tactical and hardcore than battlefield is (also a lot older than BFV).

I was affraid I would not be able to play Jedi Survivor before they decide to put EA anticheat into it too... Turns out this game is a mess, performance wise. I ended up uninstalling it after a couple of hours of play, because there is no computer on the face of our planet that can run it without major stuttering issues. I regret buying it in the first place and with this news, I won't buy an EA game again.

Good thing I didn't care about multiplayer and got the stories done before this stupid change happened 
. Weil, I guess it's time to do the same thing on Battlefield 1 before they decide to pull the trigger on this crappy anti-cheat for this one.

The "sad" reality is that even those super deep kernel level anticheats don't help these days. Sooner or later something new is needed. There are so many hardware level AI based cheats around already that are basically undetectable by everything.. THere are even some Gaming Monitors that trying to come out with a AI assisted tech like seeing enemy characters as colored blobs or so on... Drawing aproximate locations by listening the game sounds etc... its gonna be nasty future for multiplayer games sadly.

The worse part of all of this is the fact that people have to cheat on these multiplayer games in the first place. thats the sad reality about humanity.
Also cheat program developers earn loads of money doing this...
but yeah i don't understand people who buy those cheats.... This is why we can't have nice things i guess. 1 from 100 or 1000 is ruining everything for everyone else.

Yeah, you can't launch the game at all. It gives you a "Wine is not supported!" error.
