That's all folks. EA anticheat has now been added into Battlefield V, so it's the end of being able to play it on Steam Deck and other Linux systems.
This joins the likes of Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2: Deluxe Edition, EA SPORTS FC 24, EA SPORTS FIFA 23, Battlefield 2042 and Madden NFL 24 that all have EA's own homegrown anti-cheat that make them simply unplayable on systems running Linux.
Now if you try to run it, you'll be greeted with an error. A shame to see a game that's multiple years old get broken like this and no doubt EA will continue to use their own EA anticheat in future online games. Battlefield 1 is still okay, and Apex Legends is also still running but perhaps it's only a matter of time before EA force it onto those too?
Hopefully at some point Valve can find a way to work with EA on this, to get it somehow working with Proton like we've seen support for Easy Anti-Cheat, BattleEye, GameGuard and others.
What are some alternatives you can recommend for readers now looking to go elsewhere?
I don't think the anti-cheat problem will ever be solved for Linux.

Yeah, you can't launch the game at all. It gives you a "Wine is not supported!" error.
Damn, that's very inconsiderate of them.
I don’t cheat, I have no intention of cheating, why should I be punished because of the losers out there compensating for their own lack of skill in a video game?
If you are looking for a fps game in WW2 setting, I recommend Hell let Loose. If you don't like communicating a lot over a voice chat, and don't mind an "oldschool"-look, Day of Infamy is still a great game!

I had a feeling that was going to happen (which why I quickly finished the game before April 3rd) since this is the same approach as other kernel anticheats, where single player story modes are blocked from Steam Deck/Linux despite certain customers not planning to cheat or playing multiplayer online mode. If only the single player story mode didn't get hindered by an anticheat and should only be applied to those that go online only but these companies would rather lazily apply the all or nothing approach.
At this point, if you still want to play the game, you'll either have to install Windows or use a cloud service like Geforce Now whenever they update it on their end since it's offline at the moment.

Quoting: MohandevirI was affraid I would not be able to play Jedi Survivor before they decide to put EA anticheat into it too... Turns out this game is a mess, performance wise. I ended up uninstalling it after a couple of hours of play, because there is no computer on the face of our planet that can run it without major stuttering issues. I regret buying it in the first place and with this news, I won't buy an EA game again.
sounds pretty much run of mill these days for a ue4 release. I basically have to look up all the games on wikipedia and check to see what engine they are running. UE4 is almost guaranteed to have awful performance with tons of stuttering.
Quoting: pleasereadthemanualIf Ubisoft won't enable anti-cheat support for Proton for Siege even when it's seemingly done for them, I don't have much hope for these EA games using an unsupported anti-cheat.Well, not without cheating.

I mean, the cheaters beat that stuff, so I don't see why there couldn't be a Wine mod that would do the same. Just not officially.
Quoting: theHoneyBadgerI heard a rumor today that Apex Legends will be getting this new AC within the next month or two, after the whole hacking debacle during the big competition they had recently. EAC has washed their hands of EA at this point, so the writing is basically on the wall.
If they do, then you can be sure that Battlefield 1 and 4 will eventually get it because there's no way they wouldn't add it for just Battlefield V and 2042 only. I guess no one should be surprised anymore when it comes to companies like EA using these crappy anticheats that breaks our enjoyment of their games on Steam Deck/Linux.
