A freshly squeezed cup of Proton Experimental was released today by Valve containing fixes for multiple games on Steam Deck and Desktop Linux like Overwatch 2.
Firstly, they're listing Sonic Colors: Ultimate as now playable, with a lot of people using GE-Proton to play it previously. Plus there's now some initial D3D12 support for OpenVR which they note should work for Battlezone Gold Edition in DX12 mode.
Other changes include:
- Horizon Forbidden West no longer displays warning about outdated drivers with Nvidia GPUs.
- Updated Wine Mono to 9.1.0.
- Fixed Proton 9.0 regressions:
- Overwatch 2 no longer randomly crashes.
- Video playback in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition works again.
And the changes for Wine Mono (replacement for the .NET Framework) v9.1.0 are:
- Due to a license change in Vagrant, the Vagrant build files have been removed in favor of Podman. The official build of this release was also made using Podman.
- Fixed a build error on systems that use a scheduling policy not in a hard-coded list.
- Fixed a crash when auto-generating a COM interface for some classes with array types in their signature (Winehq bug 55736).
- Implemented String.Concat(object, object, object, object, __arglist) (Winehq bug 56248).
- Fixed doubled characters when typing in Terraria.
- Added support for Joystick and Keyboard inputs in Managed DirectX/monoDX.
- Added support for the ApplyToOverrides property in System.Web.Extensions.
- Fixed System.Drawing.Icon incorrectly rejecting cursor handles, which was also breaking System.Windows.Forms.Cursor.Hotspot.
- Fixed hang when System.Environment.Exit is called while another thread is in a long-running native call.
- Upstream updates:
- SDL2 to 2.30.2.
- FNA to 24.03.
- llvm-mingw to 20240320.

It doesn't crash with Proton 8. This was fixed for user reports (GitHub) while running Proton 9.
Othrewise it's quite stable. I have 300 hours on Steam alone with Proton GE 8

I'm happy to see literally any movement forward at all on VR for Linux. That's the final hurdle keeping me dual booting windows.

Definitely happy to see VR stuff being worked on, I've kinda just given up on VR until I can buy an Index (my headset was a Windows MR headset, which has awful software, awful controllers and no Linux support), but at the same time I'm hoping at least one headset with inside-out tracking will work someday.
...and I hope we see something come from Deckard. Still patiently waiting for that.

Yup. As soon as I can play Microsoft Flight Simulator in VR with a smooth framerate, I can pretty much nuke my Windows Install.
