Valve pushed out a new upgrade to Proton Experimental, their staging ground for public-testing of what will eventually make its way into a main Proton release for playing Windows games on Linux Desktop and Steam Deck. The April 12th update is quite an interesting one too.

They're now making use of an open source tool called Xalia, which a program that provides a gamepad UI for traditional desktop applications. So far this has been integrated for the launchers in Red Faction, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (the original), Clustertruck and Mugsters.

Noted as now playable includes Insanity's Blade and Bloody Walls.

Other fixes and improvements include:

  • Fix rendering of Japanese characters in the launcher of Granado Espada Japan.
  • Fixed Proton 9.0 regressions:
    • Call to Arms - Gates of Hell: Ostfront no longer closes itself when you start a skirmish.
    • Total War: WARHAMMER II no longer has clicking audio while playing videos.
    • Call of Juarez: Gunslinger no longer crashes on start.
  • Fixed Summer Islands not exiting cleanly with AMD GPUs.
  • Fixed audio in BOOMEROAD, DORONKO WANKO, NOTTOLOT.
  • Fixed Nightingale not being able to authenticate with Steam on desktop.
  • Fixed Shatterline freezing on loading screen when trying to join a second online match in a session.
  • Fixed Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood failing to launch on a fresh prefix.
  • Improved performance in We Love Katamari REROLL+ Royal Reverie.

That was NOT a game title I was expecting, but I'm sure it really benefits from its now-working audio.

I always love the confusion words like that cause amongst English-speaking audiences, hahaha!

Spoiler, click me
"Wan" is just the Japanese onomatopoeia equivalent to "woof", and "ko" is a female name suffix. It's often used in the titles of cutesy stuff about puppies.
