An upcoming game from Crescent Moon Games and Those Dang Games is Screenbound, and it really does look interesting for blending together 2D and 3D gameplay.

They say "Screenbound is a game about being distracted, but totally in control" and are claiming it's a "5D" game, since you have a Quantum boy device that transports you "into a weird dual dimensional space that occupies 5D = 3d + 2d". Now you've heard developers use 2D, 3D, 2.5D, 4D and so on but 5D? Okay then. Well, it does look genuinely interesting at least so I'll let 'em have it.

More about it from the devs:

Screenbound is a platformer unlike any other. You move in first person view at the same time while playing in 2d on the screen of your Qboy. Mind bending environmental puzzles will force you to test the limits of dimensional space. Your jumping and movements are mirrored - but certain things affect the opposite dimension. Combat is in 2d and you will receive your loot in 3d.

Find and explore many hidden areas and weird ideas will be all around you.

So how the heck did this happen? Your mom invented the device and you found it in the garage. She was keeping it secret all this time, and other dark secrets start to come out as you delve deeper. You'll find other stuff too. But let's not spoil the plot.

Screenbound also has a level editor in a traditional 2d style - but here's another twist. It auto-generates the 3d level for you! Just imagine the possibilities.

You can follow it on Steam

It looks like a very twisted evolution of Fez, and I love it. I'll keep an eye on this one, the concept is very cool.

This is why I buy indie games. There is more in gaming than FPS and third view, open world adventure games.

Also a message for Indie developers: can we have other things that are not metroidvanias? There is another genre of games that are in need of new releases.

And in VR!

The concept reminds me of Neko Ghost, Jump!, although that one switches between 2D and 3D rather than being simultaneous.
