Three sets of Steam Beta updates this weekend across SteamVR, Desktop and Steam Deck so here's all the details for you in one place.

Firstly, the SteamVR Beta v2.5.3 comes with:

Steam Link:

  • Fix an issue with video encoder initialization on certain AMD integrated GPUs.

Linux:

  • Improved launch scripts and log capture for bug reports.
  • Fixed uninitialized memory in right eye.
  • Fixed SteamVR Home launch script.

Really nice to see some VR fixes for Linux, which is pretty much always in a rough state.

There's one Steam Deck specific adjustment in the latest Beta which is:

  • Settings->Storage will now display drives that are missing a steam library as format targets.

And all these changes below affect both Steam Deck and Desktop:

Big Picture

  • Fixed an issue where after playing a game it would require extra B button presses to back out of the game's library page.

Linux

  • Fixed a case where the store tab would fail to display any content after maximizing the steam window.

Steam Input

  • New Configurator feature "Swap Left with Right": While editing a Controller Configuration, you can Swap the behavior of the Left Stick and the Right Stick, or Left Trackpad and Right Trackpad etc. Highlight the source you want to swap in the "Edit Layout" page, and the "Y" button should appear to allow the swap. This should be handy for "South Paws".
  • New Mouse Action: "Turn to Face Direction". When activating this, the camera will turn to face the direction you are pushing on the Left Stick (default - Track pads, DPads and Buttons can also be used). Can be combined with "Reset to Horizon" to produce a behavior similar to Splatoon's camera reset button. Note: Dots per 360 must be calibrated for this to be accurate.
  • New Mouse Action: "Dots per 360 Calibration". By default this will generate 360 degrees of rotation. You can use this to tune the Dots per 360 value in the Flick Stick / Gyro To Mouse modes.
  • Gyro to Joystick modes now no longer generate haptic events when outside the active range.

SteamVR linux fixes, Steam Deck maturing, proton 9 nearly ready to go...

I'm going to hope for a Deckard release announcement soon.

Oh thank God. That's been driving me absolutely mental!
QuoteImproved launch scripts and log capture for bug reports.
That suggests they plan to do more work on Linux VR bugs, yes?

I would hope they also eventually get Steam Link support for VR in Linux.

A problem I got every morning...
Couldn't get my Index to work on Linux. Ended up needing to buy a new harness cable. Lesson of the story -- never let family or friends borrow. I look forward to trying these updates (since I haven't tried since the major update)

The Cheese app screenshots from the Index webcam are really surreal and pretty stylistically interesting.

I REALLY hope Deckard is a real project that'll release, having a small cramped room this might be my best chance to experience VR again, finally
There's so many games I want to try out

Getting closer to optimal SteamVR, won't be long before Valve will actually be able to use it on their next VR headset, which I assume they still plan to do given all the steam updates referencing VR features not seen in any other headset yet.

Either some update in the last 2 months broke my Index setup somehow or the cable finally died. I spent an hour today trying to get it to work. Funnily enough, it worked on the worst attempt except for the sound. And then it never worked again no matter in what order I rebooted or connected the components 😕. Currently. I'm hoping a future version of me can be bothered to update my Ubuntu and hopefully any software issues may disappear.
