Wine 9.6 is the latest development release out now for the Windows compatibility layer, making progress on getting as many apps and games working on Linux as possible. A little testing on the cards for the weekend?

Release highlights include:

  • Support for advanced AVX features in register contexts.
  • More Direct2D effects work.
  • Support for RSA OAEP padding in BCrypt.
  • Interpreted mode fixes in WIDL.
  • Various bug fixes.

18 bugs were noted as solved including issues for nProtect GameGuard, SolidWorks 2016, ChessBase 14, Final Fantasy XI Online, Iron Harvest, The Hong Kong Massacre, Shin Koihime Eiyuutan and others.

AVX features, RSA OAEP padding in BCrypt, WIDL, don't know what that all is but it sure looks cool!
My one problem with wine is that I have a few problems with getting it to run games with disks. I have a lot of retro games that I would enjoy playing, except you need a disk drive.

in my case use this (very usefull)

https://cdemu.sourceforge.io/

and work a virtual cd/dvd drive on linux, similar to daemon tools or virtual clone drive on windows (acetone dont work like a virtual drive)

something more cdemu work like a virtual drive and have this too:

Quotehttps://cdemu.sourceforge.io/about/vhba/

VHBA module provides a Virtual (SCSI) HBA, which is the link between userspace daemon and linux kernel.

and this

https://cdemu.sourceforge.io/about/gcdemu/

gcdemu work very similar to daemon tools gui app on windows

Wine does support discs. As coasters for your bottles and glasses!
Solidworks does work in Wine? That's surprising.

I've never used it, but isn't that a popular industry-standard CAD program?

No, it’s only used for making Solid Snakes

If you still have games that are only available on physical media or isos, you should ask gog or the publisher for a digital edition.
Cdrom and DVD are deteriorating and falling apart over time.

Another advantage is that GOG has already improved the game for you:
- game updated with latest patches
- compatibility with modern OS/Hardware configuration
You will save time, fewer adjustments, they have already done the work for you.
And don't forget that you'll find plenty of script installers on Lutris for older games that also make your Linux gamer's life easier.
