Selaco is easily the game I am most excited about this year, a GZDoom powered shooter that had a brilliant demo but Altered Orbit Studios are about to delist the demo.

Why? As fantastic as the demo is, it's heavily outdated and saves won't be compatible. So to prevent people having to re-play a section and to not give the wrong impression, the demo is being removed from Steam soon. They could update the demo but that would take a fair amount of time away from just developing the game.

The good news is that as fans of game preservation, the demo is officially being uploaded to Archive.org where it will live on for a long time. Really interesting to see a developer do this, quite a nice way to preserve it in the old state. Currently the Windows demo is up but they confirmed the Linux version will be up there too.

I've seen a bunch of demos that aren't representative of the final game over the years. It's a bit like leaving your old version 0.1 placeholder-art trailer in the Steam store, and not replacing it with one showcasing the wowy-zowy graphics and features of 1.0. So it's unfortunate they don't have a replacement demo, but it makes sense to remove the old one.

I feel like demos are kinda like platform support - ie. not something you should just poop out once and then forget about, but something that should be ingrained in your game's development workflow from the start. Every time there's a new build of the main game, there should be a new build of the demo too.
This demo has a special place in my heart and on my ssd. ❤️

Man I loved this demo. Awesome to see it left up on the archives. More devs should do this! Very excited for this game, but I totally forgot that the May date is just the EARLY ACCESS date and not a release!!! Damn.

Quotewe expect to leave Early Access in 2026.

So ....... see you in three years.

Just like every book that goes into print has to offer a copy to the national library, every game that goes into circulation should offer a copy to archive.org with a clause that it can be made publicly available when it goes out of circulation and there's nobody else left who can make it happen. Just a thought.
