Well, here's a bit of a nuisance. Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR'S CUT is launching on May 16th and the developers have explained how it will work on Steam Deck but it's a mixture of good and bad news.

Sadly on Steam Deck and presumably desktop Linux too, since they both use Proton, you'll only be able to play single-player. At least, for now, until Valve can sort out whatever the issues are preventing the online mode from working.

Here's what the developer said:

Steam Deck support

We know many of you are eager to play Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut on handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck. We're happy to share that the single player experience, including the Iki Island expansion, can be enjoyed on Steam Deck and similar handheld gaming PCs as we’ve worked extensively to optimize performance and deliver the best possible experience on these devices.

You may notice that Steam marks the game as 'Unsupported' for Steam Deck. This is due to the Legends co-op multiplayer mode requiring Windows to access PlayStation Network integrated features.

For those confused, the game will have a brand new never-seen before PlayStation Overlay shipping in this game first, which hooks into the PlayStation Network for things like Friends, Trophies and more.

It may very well be the case that for now, Proton (the Windows compatibility layer), is just missing some features that need to be hooked up in a future Proton release. We've seen this sort of thing happen in the past and eventually Proton updates catch up with what's needed. So, all hope may not be lost, we just have to wait and see what Valve have to say about it. Concerning to see though, because no doubt a lot of future Sony PlayStation titles coming to PC will have this new PlayStation Network overlay. I've emailed Valve for info on this.

Worth pointing out at this point too, just like with Helldivers 2, the game has been restricted on Steam with various places unable to buy it due to the PSN requirement for the online mode.

I didn't even know that this game has multiplayer mode, and I don't expect many to be interested in multiplayer for such a game. For this game, I'm more concerned about how well the game will perform on a Steam Deck, given the AAA graphics.

And another publisher set to "ignore" in the store settings.

Since Sony isn't bothered to sell it for us here, I'm excited to play the game free of charge!

With Sony's recent behaviour their entire library is now barred from my shopping cart.

If they revoke the PSN requirement and lift the ban affecting 180 countries for all thier games then I will be happy to reconsider doing business but until that happens they are on the ban list for all PC and PS5 purchases. I will not tolerate bullying tactics from any corporation.

I beat this on the PS4, but had no idea actually that they added a Multiplayer, doesn't seem like it'd be a game that'd work well as multiplayer anyhow.

I'd like to see it in a positive way: the devs cared about making it work on Steam Deck! That's progress, shows that awareness of devs and publishers is there!

Yet we have the issue that games are mainly made for and supported on Windows, so Proton will always have to catch up when new features are implemented. Which is the waiting game, sometimes we're lucky and it's implemented rather quickly after release, sometimes it takes ages... and maybe it'll never be implemented.

I hope at some point we'll see devs reaching out to Valve or the Wine project to get their game supported before official release. Seeing them optimizing for Steam Deck and testing it is amazing already though.

Quoting: TevurIt's a shame that Sony at first secures a place in PC Gamers heart for bringing great games like Horizon, God of War, Returnal, Last of Us and more to PC and than so clumsily tear it down with this absolut very bullshit.
Why?
WHY? It makes absolutely no sense at all.

Most likely the executives at sony decided that a large increase in new PSN accounts would be the marker for success to the stock market. Unfortunately it appears that their stock price has recovered from the HD2 furor in the last 24 hours, so now those executives have proven this strategy works.

One of the main selling point of Steam, especially with proton, is that it supports games forever. 30 years from now if I get nostlgic I will be able to play a game of today thanks to compatibility lazers and such. But when games demands untrusted networks like Sony, Microsoft, Ubisoft to fire up it's a given that those games will be unplayble. Unless the cracks are still around, but that still means hassle on our part. This trend... defeats a lot of the purpose of Steam. And objectively they are worth less dollars than an hypothetical "non third party account" counterpart.

Considering that the overlay and PSN are going to be used from now on for Sony's games, I'm pretty sure Valve is already working on a fix. This doesn't mean that I like what Sony is doing right now.

Quoting: Pengling
Quoting: CatKillerThere are people on the Internet who say anything.

This one's been flagged as having PSN integration for ages, and was always going to be part of having PSN as a Rockstar/EA/Ubisoft-style parallel store and launcher move. The lesson recently was that you can't accidentally sell games that need a thing in countries where you don't have the thing.
Yeah, I know. My point was simply that there were statements made just a matter of days ago, when people raised concerns, that've aged rather like milk. I just found it kinda funny!

Not just random people, but even the developer tried to calm people down by saying that PSN will be required only in multiplayer. I guess they didn't know that Sony will delist the game everywhere, where their shitty service is not available, making the whole game basically same as requiring PSN.

Now the developer is basically saying they couldn't get the networking working on Steam Deck. This is not developer's or Valve's fault, that's on Sony too because they have made some new broken online service. If Sony would have let the developer use Steam networking services, we would not have any issues.

TLDR: Sony is forcing their half-cooked PSN network on everyone and everyone suffers because of that.
