Valve put up a fresh Proton Experimental update today now than Proton 9.0 is officially available, with the usual assorted game compatibility improvements for Steam Deck / Linux.

Noted in the changelog is that FreestyleFootball R is now playable as of this release and additionally they've added support for OpenXR 1.1.36. Another change is that Valve have limited the CPU cores seen by Command & Conquer and The Covert Operations, allowing them to be played on high core-count systems (much like they did for multiple titles in Proton 9.0).

The rest of the fixes are:

  • Fixed scaling in The Desolate Hope when playing on desktop.
  • Fixed Marvel vs Capcom crashing when creating multiplayer lobby.
  • Fixed Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition crashing when skipping intro videos.
  • Fixed Beat Saber not being playable on Nvidia GPUs without using the legacy branch.

The Desolate Hope is a game I haven't heard in a longgggg time; good to see Scott Cawthons earlier projects are still getting some love somewhere.

A fellow Linux VR gamer told me this might fix most nVidia related VR issues, e.g. for him Open Brush and Banter works now (both free). I'll have to test it with Pistol Whip and Boom Box. Hubris recently added support for SteamVR/OpenVR (so it worked for me before this update), but maybe works better with OpenXR. Time for some testing!

It's for sure one of his best works; sucks he just stopped making anything else really after FNaF; but hey, time might change that and he makes a sequel to it.

I can confirm that Pistol Whip and Boombox work again. SteamVR 2.5 (stable), nVidia driver 550.78.
Gosh, I missed playing Pistol Whip!
