Puppygames are launching a new game with Battledroid, a massively multiplayer online asynchronous PvP battle simulator that has a rather big scale to it.

For those who don't immediately recognise the name, Puppygames made the likes of: Revenge of the Titans, Titan Attacks!, Droid Assault, Ultratron and Basingstoke. Revenge of the Titans is a bit of a classic! One from the second Humble Indie Bundle which had the source code released.

Using their own "state-of-the art custom voxel graphics engine" they call VOXOID, they wrote it from scatch in Java and OpenGL to allow them to "create spectacular battles" which they say supports "massive super-detailed landscapes, thousands of battling droids, and millions of particles to create explosive effects". The trailer does a pretty poor job of showing off what the overall gameplay will be like but imagine an auto-battler on a massive scale as you will battle for territory across 250,000 tiles set across a persistent open world map of the real Earth, using actual terrain and environmental data.

You set up all your units (in defence, or attack), tweak their parameters a little, and then launch your attack - and sit back to watch them blow each other to bits. Winner keeps or takes the territory. There's a lot more explained and shown via gifs and screenshots on the Kickstarter.

They've been building the game on and off now for around 14 years from the initial designs back in 2010, to having a Beta available on Steam now (for backers). They're hoping to raise at least £27,600 from the new Kickstarter, so they can get working on it full time to push it over the finishing line.

I love Puppygames but "persistent" worlds end up being a no go for me, mostly because I play games so infrequently but also because the power levels increase to the point that a newb like me doesn't have a chance without serious grinding.

Love the look though but I love the look of voxels in general. I'll look forward to seeing more trailers just to admire them.

Same, I just don't have the time to keep up on games like this, but I backed it anyway because I've enjoyed their other games, plus they recently did some updates to Basingstoke (currently in a beta branch) so I feel like they deserve some money for that at least
