Operation Completed? Sony announced their plans for forcing PlayStation Network accounts for Helldivers 2 have now been scrapped.

Writing on X (formerly Twitter) the official PlayStation account posted:

Helldivers fans -- we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward. We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.

This comes after a huge backlash seeing the Steam page for Helldivers 2 hit over 200,000 negative reviews in the space of only a few days. As a result, it became one of the worst reviewed games of all time on Steam.

The situation was evolving pretty quickly, with Sony removing the purchasing option of Helldivers 2 on Steam in 177 regions. At of time of writing, that has not been reversed yet but hopefully it will so people won't have to resort to workarounds.

Now we have to wait and see what happens to all the negative reviews. I imagine quite a lot will stick, but there will likely be a good amount of players that either remove their negative review, or swap it over to a positive rating to reflect Sony actually listening.

HELLDIVERS 2 works great on Linux with Proton and is rated Steam Deck Playable.

Another win for democracy!

I'm glad to hear that this worked out for the best because customers spoke up. Hell, the statement "We're still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable." even sounds almost-sincere, too.
Color me surprised. Hopefully, if I buy it again, I won't experience the same crashes and freezes as when it first came out.
I will keep the Negative Review. No one can say that Sony wont try that again in the future.

I'm sure that they only understand that they cannot change to "non required" to "required".
The next game that they publishes I'm sure they'll have "required" from the start.

GOOD! Managed Democracy wins again!
It's a good development, quite happy for Helldivers 2 players :)

Sony were testing the waters and see how far they could go with their PC player base. I'm quite surprised they didn't double down on it since there are plenty of bad examples for the last two years.

It's a good example on how a harsh reaction by large numbers is efficient against big corpos. It's all about the balance of power afterall.

Don't think for a moment they won't try again though.

It's a good game but ultimately an online only service which you, as a player/customer, cannot control without dedicated server binaries that are not available.

Things like this will continue to happen. And, yes, the game servers will be eventually shut down and all your micro transactions content will be gone.

The amount of backlash they could have saved by making it optional and gifting some cool armor or something for those who logged in is amazing. People would log in just for the armor and everyone would be happy.
Years ago I did a Warner account just for the free batsuits of the Arkham games.
