Operation Completed? Sony announced their plans for forcing PlayStation Network accounts for Helldivers 2 have now been scrapped.
Writing on X (formerly Twitter) the official PlayStation account posted:
This comes after a huge backlash seeing the Steam page for Helldivers 2 hit over 200,000 negative reviews in the space of only a few days. As a result, it became one of the worst reviewed games of all time on Steam.
The situation was evolving pretty quickly, with Sony removing the purchasing option of Helldivers 2 on Steam in 177 regions. At of time of writing, that has not been reversed yet but hopefully it will so people won't have to resort to workarounds.
Now we have to wait and see what happens to all the negative reviews. I imagine quite a lot will stick, but there will likely be a good amount of players that either remove their negative review, or swap it over to a positive rating to reflect Sony actually listening.
HELLDIVERS 2 works great on Linux with Proton and is rated Steam Deck Playable.

Quoting: EriThe amount of backlash they could have saved by making it optional and gifting some cool armor or something for those who logged in is amazing. People would log in just for the armor and everyone would be happy.
Years ago I did a Warner account just for the free batsuits of the Arkham games.
They should totally do that and pay you for consulting. ;-)
Quoting: TimeFreezeI will keep the Negative Review. No one can say that Sony wont try that again in the future.
Ditto. I was willing to forgive the rootkit gameguard stuff because eveyone had good things to say about them but after this, any credit I was willing to extend has been spent. I'll check back in a year or so and see if they've actually stuck to any of this or whether they've just decided to try and slip it by when the heat dies down.
Quoting: pbThey should totally do that and pay you for consulting. ;-)The bigger the paycheck, the better. Someone call AH.
Quoting: jordicomaI'm sure that they only understand that they cannot change to "non required" to "required".And that's fair. No one is forced to buy a game if they don't agree with linking accounts.
The next game that they publishes I'm sure they'll have "required" from the start.
Making a game you bought unplayable after a few weeks because of this was on the other hand not acceptable.
Quoting: PenglingI'm glad to hear that this worked out for the best because customers spoke up. Hell, the statement "We're still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable." even sounds almost-sincere, too. It's always nice when they bother to get a PR person who has some idea how to Relate to the Public.
