Operation Completed? Sony announced their plans for forcing PlayStation Network accounts for Helldivers 2 have now been scrapped.

Writing on X (formerly Twitter) the official PlayStation account posted:

Helldivers fans -- we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward. We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.

This comes after a huge backlash seeing the Steam page for Helldivers 2 hit over 200,000 negative reviews in the space of only a few days. As a result, it became one of the worst reviewed games of all time on Steam.

The situation was evolving pretty quickly, with Sony removing the purchasing option of Helldivers 2 on Steam in 177 regions. At of time of writing, that has not been reversed yet but hopefully it will so people won't have to resort to workarounds.

Now we have to wait and see what happens to all the negative reviews. I imagine quite a lot will stick, but there will likely be a good amount of players that either remove their negative review, or swap it over to a positive rating to reflect Sony actually listening.

HELLDIVERS 2 works great on Linux with Proton and is rated Steam Deck Playable.

Remember gamers, we are not powerless. Stop rolling over an taking it, scream and shout! Just don't be an asshole about.
I think we need to be careful here. During this mess Sony blocked over 170 countries from buying the game that contained users that already could buy the game. As part of this they have NOT reinstated sales in those territories. As some game devs, users, and streamers have noted - this is not "won" unless that is also undone.

Why? Because they can just bide time and try to enforce the login again, just this time without the bite of the pushback relating to users losing access as "those countries can't buy the game now".

Which is an indication that data gathering & surveillance is more important to them than sales ... which is supremely odd, since Sony is not an ad broker & influence peddler like Google.

out of curiosity, are those 170 countries also the ones where PSN doesn't exist?

Yes.

However, it should be noted that an image of an email was sent in from a player who had trouble creating a PSN in a country where it does exist and Sony Support told them they had to buy a PS4 or PS5 to create a PSN account

Well that is lowest bidder support service for ya, nothing like having to explain to a company rep how their own products works :)
Good result...... But it will still stay on my ignore list......
A FITTING PUNISHMENT.......

Technically, nothing has been changed, It still has the tag on the store page on steam of "Requires 3rd-Party Account: PlayStation Network (Supports Linking to Steam Account)" There has been no rollback, just a no go for today and the 30th so far. The fight is not over until we get the rest of the helldivers back from the countries that were locked out of the psn network.
