Valve seem to be actually cleaning up SteamVR on Linux a bit more recently, which is kind of exciting when it's been left rough for so long.
A Beta update for SteamVR on April 26th included fixes on Linux for uninitialized memory in the right eye, they fixed the SteamVR Home launch script and even improved launch scripts and log capture for bug reports. An earlier one on March 26th also added support for direct mode drivers (IVRDriverDirectModeComponent) on Linux too.
Now we have another small update to the SteamVR Beta that "Fixed an SDL compatibility problem on Fedora" along with two other main SteamVR changes:
- Fixing missing haptic component in some Vive tracker profiles.
- Fixing some scenarios where the menu button didn't work on trackers.
We've seen the rumours for a long time now on an upcoming Valve Steam VR headset, code-named Deckard. So perhaps we're starting to see a little extra work here towards that end? Who knows. Either way, it's truly nice to see Linux actually getting some VR attention from Valve.
For our VR readers: what's the issue annoying you the most with VR on Linux right now?
Quoting: GuestBiggest frustration? Well, last I tried 2.0+, the bug that causes async reprojection to be unusable still hasn't been fixed:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamVR-for-Linux/issues/616
That would be mine as well. No report from the last three betas though, so I may take my upcoming free week to run a few tests.
Quoting: BrokattHow is the VR experience on Linux? I have a Valve Index but haven't used it since I switched from Windows.
There are definitely issues, but there's also a lot that works well. With an Index, it's worth setting up.
What I've played with either an OG HTC Vive or a Valve Index recently (with nVidia GPU):
- Beat Saber (legacy branch, should be fixed now)
- Synth Riders with this neat song downloader
- Pistol Whip (had to downgrade, but might be fixed now)
- Elite Dangerous Horizons (Odyssey works too with parts being theatre mode)
- No Man's Sky
- Hubris
- Wanderer (needs a save game transfer to Windows shorty for continuation at some points once)
- Cybrid
- Until You Fall
- After The Fall
- Dead Effect 2 VR
- Doom VFR
- Borderlands 2 VR
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR
- Groove Gunner
- Megaton Rainfall
- OhShape
- Prey: Typhoon Hunter
- Propagation VR
- Ragnarock
- Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality
- The Solus Project
- Star Trek: Bridge Crew
- Star Wars: Squadrons
- The Station VR
- Vacation Simulator
- The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners
- Westworl Awakening
- Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot
Yep... a lot of stuff works! VR on Linux is fun!

Just to say it's working again out of the box. I missed this game so much. :)
-having to mount base stations & them being fragile
-being afraid its still too buggy
-wanting more portable ("base-less") VR
-not having VR
Jokes aside do VR users think 3060Ti is good enough for VR?

I've used an OG Vive on a 2070 Super and currently an RX 6600 and it's fine on both, so a 3060 Ti should be plenty.
