I know this will excite many of you. DOOM: The Dark Ages has been announced today and it will arrive on Steam in 2025. Get ready for more ripping and tearing.
Vile forces push a kingdom to the brink. Fangs gnashing, their fury is emboldened by the flames of Hell’s own malevolence. No mortal blade cuts their masses down. No bulwark stays their advance. No army dares match them in the battlefield.
But you will. You are the super weapon primed to destroy evil.
For when Hell is at the gates, the DOOM Slayer answers.
Seems like I really need to go and play through DOOM Eternal to the finish now. I know, I'm a bit of a late bloomer on the recent DOOM games after only finishing DOOM in the last year. Although, you don't actually have to play the others, since DOOM: The Dark Ages shows off the Slayer's origin and is actually a prequel to the other two modern DOOM games. Oh, and this time you've got some fun toys to play with like the Atlan, a "daunting skyscraper-sized mech capable of toppling Hell’s behemoths with titanic metal fists" and a Mecha Dragon to fly around on too.

Since it will be on Steam, thanks to Proton we shouldn't have much trouble playing it, and we know id Software use Vulkan so it's likely it will run really well.
Hell yeah, this looks awesome!
Read more in the full announcement. The Steam page isn't up yet but should be soon (update: Steam page is live).
Quoting: StalePopcornQuoting: finaldestYes, Another Doom game.
Was not a fan of Eternal so hope the game is more like 2016.
I was going to complain about the publisher but lost my train of thought when I read this comment. I completely agree! Too much dancing, weapons swapping, etc for my old ass self when I wanted a beautfil boomer shooter with a couple of extras. I reinstalled and am trying another go at the wimpiest level 🙄
As many have pointed out in various threads in the Doom community, those mechanics people complain about are mostly optional. Learning advanced maneuvers like weapon switching is technically optional. That said, the games are a LOT more difficult if played like shooters of old. That being said, these games are not for everyone.

They're essentially trying to make it closer to the original doom games
It sounds very promising
Quoting: Purple Library GuyThere's even a Bomberman spin-off series with massive mechs, so yes.Quoting: JarmerDoes it really need building size mechs?Doesn't everything need building size mechs?
Quoting: Doktor-MandrakeSo those of you worried this will be like Eternal, it won't be.. and it won't be like 2016 either

"But for long-time fans of the series, people who played the original Doom, you'll see it's really a return to form."
... IS THE BEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!!!!! Oh man, my excitement just shot up for this. Bring. It. On.

Yeah I do like how they aren't afraid to experiment with their formula.. for AAA it's very refreshing to see them think outside the box but still have a big budget title.. every Doom game they have made mixed up the formula and experiments every single time so far
That said, nothing will ever top the original games. I do think they realise that what they make isn't intended to replace the original games but honour them
Honestly I will play the old games until the day I die, especially when the community never stops making amazing new content
I actually would really like to see the modern id software make a smaller budget doom game using something like gzdoom, looking at the things that selaco is doing I think they could make something really special

ha! I could not agree more. Especially since ... once a year my good friend and I pick a community megawad or conversion or whatever for d1 or d2 and just run through the entire thing as fast as we can (which is usually like a couple months lol). We loved Sigil and can't wait to play Sigil 2 or whatever Romero is calling it.
Also ... ever since I played Warhammer Boltgun, I've had this recurring thought exactly like you: What if modern id made a game like this in gzd. They could do something like this in between the huge gigantic AAA releases and just .......... GO BONKERS. Do whatever crazy fun stuff they wanted.
i really enjoyed 2016 but didn't care much for eternal. imo in eternal they really forced you to play a certain way rather than leave it up to the player to decide how they will take care of business - also mega neon which didn't feel doomlike to me. kind of looks like the trailer is bit more doom eternal than 2016 might get it on a heavy discount to hopefully find out i was wrong.
One suspicion is that since Doom is currently a well-resurrected (!) money-maker of a franchise/'ip', MS/Bethesda won't even let id experiment with another 'ip', or a Quake (Quake I, of course) reboot.
Though that might not be the only factor, because Hugo Martin seems to have been determined to cram as much 'thematic stuff' into Doom as possible right from the start. They were simply being cautious in 2016 with the background story & lore -- and ironically, critics at the time praised this 'fresh new direction' ('See how Doomguy tossed away the exposition screen in the beginning! That just signals that id themselves are tossing away convoluted narratives and exposition dumps!!!' ... little did they know).
Quoting: PenglingPff, that's nothing! Until the Steam Deck and its ilk, my FPS motion-sickness issues stopped me from playing any of them! I'm still inching through Doom II right now, with Doom 64, 2016, and Eternal sitting in my library waiting for their turn.Doom64 was awesome. The Brutal mod (I think that is what it was called) is sweet too. There is definitely a happiness with hearing the original Doom game on a MT-32 or Gravis Ultrasound too.
