A nice little win for preserving the classics. GOG teamed up with Capcom to bring Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 to their store with a few improvements. Only the first game is currently live, with 2 and 3 to come at a later date when they're ready.

The improvements GOG list:

  • Full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11.
  • All 4 localizations of the game included (English, German, French, Japanese).
  • Improved DirectX game renderer.
  • New rendering options (Windowed Mode, Vertical Synchronization Control, Gamma Correction, Integer Scaling, Anti-Aliasing and more).
  • Improved timing of the cutscenes.
  • Improved game video player.
  • Improved game registry settings.
  • Issue-free game exit and task switching.
  • Full support for modern controllers (Sony DualSense, Sony DualShock4, Microsoft Xbox Series, Microsoft Xbox One, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, Logitech F series and many more) with optimal button binding regardless of the hardware and wireless mode.

You can order all 3 as a bundle and get the 2nd and 3rd games when they're live at a discounted rate too.

Thanks to all the improvements to Wine / Proton over the years, running them on Linux and Steam Deck shouldn't be much of a problem with the likes of Heroic, Lutris and other launchers.

The good old days of Resident Evil and those dreaded tank controls

I used to love these versions of the game but after playing the remakes, it's hard to go back. Also, I do wonder if this means GOG will get any of the remake versions of Resident Evil in the future because I'm sure a lot of fans would want those as well.

EDIT: I hope they keep those campy dialogues from Resident Evil 1 because those were funny and iconic to listen to.

Wanted this for sooo long now

The fact they added integer scaling and modern controller support is a nice touch too

Great stuff! Konami should put Silent Hill 2 on gog as well along with the community made Enhanced Edition patch

Ayyy! I've been meaning to play the originals. The remakes didn't really hit as much as I thought they would, so maybe these ones will do the trick.

I will wait some months to see if this will land on Steam too. I'd much rather buy it there.

Good news for me. With the exception of the GameCube remake of RE1, I am not a fan of the Resident Evil remakes. The classic RE games with tanks controls will always be my favorites; especially RE2.

I've wanted to give the PC releases of these games a try, but I do not know an easy method of installing the Sourcenext releases on Linux. Something like these are right up my alley.

Nostalgia Trip Time:
I didn't get into Resident Evil (RE) back then because even though I've seen it in video game magazines, I never understood the appeal until hearing Will Smith on Access Hollywood (US entertainment TV show) talking about playing RE1 when PS1 was brand new. Once I got a PS1, I gave it a try and was blown away but how the game looked and played at the time. The crazy thing was that I didn't have a memory card to save my progress but made it pretty far until those mutants (still hate them to this day) killed my momentum.

As for RE2, I still have fond memories of it on the PS1 since I loved how Capcom was able to make the game work brilliantly when it came to which disk you started out playing first and how the stories converged at the end once you completed it with the second disk.

Unfortunately, I only completed RE3 once on PS1 and didn't remember much about the settings and everything about what Jill was doing in the story. One day, I may revisit this one again once I have the time to jump back into it.
