Square Enix have now released the KINGDOM HEARTS series on Steam, enabling many more people to experience the grand adventure on Steam Deck and desktop Linux easily with Proton.

The beloved KINGDOM HEARTS franchise was first released in 2002 by Square Enix, and led by legendary game director Tetsuya Nomura, thus launching the longstanding collaboration between Square Enix and Disney. Since then, over 36 million copies have shipped worldwide.

Finally, after being Epic Exclusive for so long! Hopefully we won't see such long exclusive deals in future, as part of Square Enix's change in strategy they announced recently.

The Steam release includes all these across different packages:

  • KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX.
  • KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.
  • KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind DLC.
  • KINGDOM HEARTS INTEGRUM MASTERPIECE (bundle that includes all the above compilations).

They're also giving away multiple Steam Decks as announced on X (formerly Twitter). See their official giveaway on how to enter. Good luck if you're planning to enter!

Currently at time of writing there's no Steam Deck rating from Valve on any of them, but I would expect Valve to put them through review soon.

You can buy the series on Steam. The games also 31% off until June 27th.

As someone who has never played one of these games before, I can't say that trailer did a good of convincing me to pick it up; it did leave me confused though, so that's something!

I know. I grew up wanting to play these games because they seemed so cool. This trailer makes them look boring.

I've played every single Kingdom Hearts game, and I'll say this, Disney x Final Fantasy is easily the best crossover ever made in a video game.

Fair warning, despite the premise being silly, the lore is extremely deep. You literally have to play most of the side games to understand the story of II and III. Fortunately, a few of the more obtuse handheld ones got re-released with the compilations as fully voiced ~2hr movies, so new players wouldn't have to suffer through playing them.

Tv Tropes has extensive articles on all the games, and each game has a separate headscratcher page.

An understanding of certain philosophies that regard the body, mind, and soul as entirely separate also helps. The tv tropes page has the following quote:

Spoiler, click me
Everyone has a Heart, Soul, and Body. Well, every normal person. Individual worlds also have Hearts, and in-game text alludes to them being somewhat sentient. Memory is also part of the equation, hinted to be another aspect of the Heart.

The Body is Exactly What It Says on the Tin—the thing that holds the Heart and is animated by the Soul.
The Heart contains the emotions and identity of an individual, and are made up of light and darkness. If the Heart is overcome by Darkness, it can separate itself from the Body and Soul and become a Heartless. It's accepted by most characters that a person without a Heart isn't really a person at all. The reality is slightly less complex; anyone or anything that wants to think of itself as a person can likely generate a Heart.
The Soul is seemingly simple—it's the animating force that gives life and movement to a body and heart. It's also translated as "Spirit" and synonymous with "Will" later in the series. Theoretically, if you somehow give or transplant a soul to an object, that object will gain a mind of its own and move around. In extreme circumstances, the Soul by itself could be enough to keep a Body moving. When a Heartless is formed, the Body and Soul left behind may reanimate into a Nobody, if the individual was particularly strong-willed.
Memory is hinted to be similar to one's Mind, and is critical to the function of a Heart, but not entirely the same. Nobodies have no Hearts but retain Memory to teach them how to fake emotions, Replicas are Artificial Humans made of Memory, and Memory can be used to strengthen or weaken one's Heart. Additionally, Chain of Memories says memories of different people can be connected, like links in a chain, and that chain can be broken, mended or reorganized. This means that as Sora forgets people as he proceeds through Castle Oblivion, the people he forgets about forget him, too.

I usually don't buy anymore before I have time to actually play them, but in this case I will make an exception.

Every. Damn. Time.
What makes Quebec special? For me it sounds like saying Germany, but excluding Bavaria.
Stricter laws surrounding gambling and lotteries. The gist of it is that giveaways past a certain value need to be registered and approved, and many companies prefer not to bother and just exclude Quebec. It’s similar to how you sometimes see exclusions for both Quebec and California in some terms of use, because their laws don’t allow some of the typical bullshit clauses companies like to use (and are allowed to in the rest of the respective countries).

its just me or we are living long enough to see square enix pushing an linux device for some reason as the go to device to play their game?

Because they'd look pretty stupid pushing the ROG Ally and its notorious problems and poor aftersales support, I guess.

Its cheaper than a ROG Ally.... And the ROG Ally X wont be out until after the give away most likely....... So why would they give away an almost outdated original ROG Ally???.....

And the Steam Deck has the Steam Client preinstalled on which they sell their games.

Yep, and it's an overall better experience, too.

What strange times we live in - did anyone ever expect all these big devs to be promoting a Linux device? It certainly wasn't on my bingo-card!
