Athena Crisis is a modern retro turn-based strategy game inspired by Advance Wars, and not only is now Steam Deck Verified but they've announced the full release is coming soon. In case you missed it, a bunch of it is also open source now too.
In a post on Steam they confirmed September 23rd it will leave Early Access with a big upgrade bringing with it:
- The full single-player story campaign, featuring over 30 maps and missions.
- Brand-new units, enemies, and skills.
- Even more options for user-generated puzzle maps, PVP challenges, and full campaigns.
That's only some of what's to come they said. A recent update also improved gamepad support!

More about it:
Athena Crisis is a modern retro turn-based strategy game that presents multiple gripping single-player campaigns alongside sync and async online multiplayer, as well as a full map and campaign editor, leaderboards, player skills and unit powers. Fans of Into The Breach, Advance Wars, or Fire Emblem will feel right at home in Athena Crisis!
Victory in Athena Crisis can be obtained in multiple ways: defeat all enemy units to clear a map, take over your opponent’s structures and bases, escort units to an escape zone, or simply survive for a period of time against overwhelming odds. Outwit, outbuild, and outfight your opponents to become the best Athena Crisis player.
You can buy it on Steam and see the source on GitHub.
Quoting: DrakkerIt looks great and all, but everything is sooo slow. I hope there's a way to disable animations, or at least, speed them up significantly.
You can change the animation speed in the settings! Click on Settings and under the Game Settings tab you'll be able to switch between Regular, Fast AI, and Always Fast speeds.
Speaking of Fire Emblem, I bought Symphony of War TWO YEARS AGO, and I've yet to try it. Both of these games will be awesome on the Steam Deck. I need to sort my life out!
