With the original Resident Evil now on GOG and the later games to come, GE-Proton / Proton-GE has a new release out to fix some issues in it and other games.

This is the community-build of Proton, not to be confused with the official Proton from Valve. You'll find GE adds specific fixes that Valve often can't (due to legal reasons) but GE comes with less testing and support. Usually you only want to use it for specific games until they work properly in Valve's Proton, or for using Proton outside of Steam. See more about Proton in my guide.

Available across GE-Proton 9-8 and the version 9-9 hotfix:

  • wine updated to latest bleeding edge
  • dxvk updated to latest git
  • vkd3d-proton updated to latest git
  • dxvk-nvapi updated to latest git
  • steam client changes pulled in from upstream
  • vrclient changes pulled in from upstream
  • various game quirk fixes pulled in from upstream (Farlight 84, MultiVersus, Bad Mojo Redux, (Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura)
  • umu clients can now run winetricks verbs (Thanks R1kaB3rN)
  • added pending patch for DXGI_FORMAT_R8G8B8A8_UNORM on d2d_wic_render_target_init needed for Alt:V -- GTA V custom client (Thanks S0P4)
  • staging patches rebased (minor)
  • fsr patch rebased (minor)
  • protonfixes: winetricks updated to current git
  • protonfixes: winetricks vcrun2022 sha256 hashes updated for vcrun2022 (Winetricks/winetricks#2235)
  • protonfixes: fix added for Contractors VR (thanks ToRRent1812)
  • protonfixes: fix added for gog: resident evil (thanks ImLinguin and keenanweaver)

See all on the GitHub releases.

I just tried it on the Steam Deck and for some reason, it won't launch unless I use WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" %command% but this causes the FMV not to play. However, despite not seeing the FMV, you can still play the game fine and I don't know if I missed something when using this version of GE-Proton.

Just a question : do specific changes made in GE get eventually backported into mainstream Proton ?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but no changes from GE gets backported into Proton since they contain video codecs and other libraries that cannot be distributed unless a license is paid to allow it. This is why Valve doesn't include certain video codecs with Proton (which is those colored bars that appear during cinematic scene) and has to use workarounds to make it play nice.

That's part of it yes, Valve cannot legally provide support for the codecs used, GE works around it.

As for "backported into mainstream Proton", a lot of what is pulled into GE is directly from upstream Proton (and it's related packages) just it's sometimes faster (but again, less testing and no real support).

Cool. I intend to play through the GOG releases of the Resident Evil games as soon as all three are available.

Shame too since having the old pc versions of re available drm free is a big win for preservation, but having licensed codecs takes away from that abit

I'm glad there's workarounds with these sort of things, same reason I can enjoy my wireless xbox controllers on linux using official dongle as well

I installed the game from GOG using the offline installer and added it to steam as a non-steam game. Unfortunately, it doesn't launch with or without GE-Proton 9-9. The launch options
Quoting: ToddLWINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" %command%
don't do anything either. Has anyone gotten it working?

Try using Proton Experimental to see if it runs with the launch option WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" %command% because that's what I was using prior to testing out GE-Proton 9-9.
