TheForceEngine is an open source modern "Jedi Engine" replacement supporting Dark Forces, mods, and in the future Outlaws. A new release version 1.10.000 just rolled out.

With this new version the initial support of Nightdive's Dark Forces Remaster has landed, however a bunch of its HD Assets are not supported yet but will be in future. TheForceEngine is also set up to now automatically detect the Dark Forces Remaster as a game data source.

Some new cheats were added including one hit kill, one hit death, 9 lives, the ability to render everything at full-brightness and a new cheat menu is also in. Plenty of bug fixes too, you can also now disable screen flashes, crouch toggle is now an option and much more.

This release also came with a few Linux fixes too:

  • SDL2 fixes on Linux.
  • Fixed numerous clang/gcc warnings, Linux issues, 32-bit issues (though no 32-bit support on Windows is planned), and enabled GCC LTO (Link Time Optimizations).
  • Added workaround for GLEW on Wayland.

Coming up in a future release is also a full Level Editor, so it will be interesting to see if a community builds up around that. We could end up seeing some pretty fun stuff made for it. Nice to see another game engine reimplementation keep getting better!

See the full release notes.

You can buy the Dark Forces Remaster from:

In case anyone was confused as I was, Outlaws is a '97 LucasArts shooter, and is a Western totally unrelated to Star Wars.

The upcoming Ubisoft AAA extravaganza is not running on the Dark Forces engine. That would be silly.
For easy (read:sane) installation there are Flatpak and Snap packages now:

As of time of writing not yet updated though. So packagers, please update soon

This is what I've been waiting for so I can play Dark Forces easily on Steam Deck. I'm also waiting for Outlaws support as I'd like to play that again too.
I have always been quite wary of these commercial Nightdive remasters outcrowding the open-source community implementations, especially since they essentially abandoned Linux afer Forsaken. It is good then to see projects like this, Doom 64 EX Plus, and Exhumed Plus (WIP), that allow the new content to be available to everyone indefinitly (in 20 years these closed Kex ports will be just as mothballed as the DOS originals). I rather wish someone would update rottexpr to load the Ludicrous Edition content, but given the slow pace of ROTT source port development thus far that might be wishful thinking, and is not even really an option for something like Killing Time or PO'd. Some credit to id for releasing code that made the new Quake releases more easily compatible with the existing source ports.

This is really great news. The remastered has great hd textures but the kbd+mouse controls are awful. Finally we can have the best of both worlds.

Many thanks to the Force Engine team.
