While the Linux support of ALVR is still quite rough due to various issues with SteamVR, ALVR is a very promising way to stream VR games to your headset via Wi-Fi and a new release is out now with v20.9.1.

Quite an exciting release actually bringing much improved audio support on Linux, thanks to it now supporting PipeWire! As the developers said in their release post: "PipeWire support was in the making for a long time. Finally now audio works out of the box on Linux without the need of any external software except the PipeWire system package. This puts Linux on par if not on better support status than Windows!". Fantastic news.

They've also now had a Meta AppLab release, with ALVR also landing in PICO Lab soon.

All the changes:

Changes for v20.9.1

  • Fix performance issues on lobby room.

Changes for v20.9.0

See all on the GitHub page.

Now if only any of my games ran half decently on linux. Only reason I still have a windows partition is for VR. Even with all the right parts, an AMD graphics card and an HTC vive, the experience is glitchy and inconsistent everytime.

It's still a big hurdle for Linux gaming. A big problem is that VR seems rather dormant now. I feel like after Alex people stopped caring about VR (I me that's kinda how I felt)

Unfortunately I haven't had much luck with ALVR + Quest 2 yet. When I try to play SteamVR games it does run kind of smoothly but whenever I turn my head the movement is very stuttery and makey any game unplayable for me. No matter if WiFi or usb-c connected.
My last test was last year though, maybe I should give it another try.
That's great. When a headset comes around that is worth my time and money to look at, this will come in handy.
