Ah, auto battlers, at one point they seemed like they would be all the rage, but most quickly moved on. Mechabellum thankfully, feels a bit different, and quickly became a real favourite and it's set to leave Early Access on September 26. Disclosure: my key was originally sent by TriplePoint PR.

I think what really makes Mechabellum good is the actual action. I mean sure, you're not directing units manually like an RTS, but the explosive destruction when the battle gets going is just pure joy to watch. Unless the destruction is happening to you that is. Just look at these shots I took just today (click them to see bigger):

From the email that went out the full release will bring in new unit techs, specialists, and a seasonal system with rewards, with more content planned for the future.

  • Regular content updates planned for the future

It's a strategy game for people who love an RTS but don't have a lot of time, so it's a nice sort-of in-between game that for me fits the bill quite nicely. You get to pick a fun load-out of units each round, and watch them all clash in the middle while you sit back and watch the fireworks and decide what you're going to tweak for the next round.

The game works perfectly on Linux with Proton 9. Love it.

It will be $14.99 / £14.99 / €14.99 at release. Well worth picking up right now though.

You can check it out on Steam.
