NVIDIA today released driver 560.35.03 as the latest stable version for Linux users, so here's all that's changed.

This is the first stable release of the 560 series, so it brings together all the changes from 560.28.03 and 560.31.02 that were released across late July and early August. That includes defaulting to open GPU kernel modules by default if your GPU supports it, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) for Wayland on pre-Volta GPUs and more.

What's new as of this release includes:

  • Fixed a bug, introduced in 555.58, where some DVI outputs would not work with HDMI monitors.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause KDE Plasma Shell to freeze while hovering over or opening applets when running in Wayland compositor mode.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause the display to freeze when presenting windows using Wayland direct scanout on multiple monitors.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause kernel crashes upon attempting KMS operations through DRM when nvidia_drm was loaded with modeset=0.

Extra-testing is cooking it on Arch Linux. Just waiting to try as soon as it hits Extra repo, and try once again to use sway as a substitute to i3wm and evaluate how Wayland support has changed in this new version.
I'm ready. If this works out right, might just dump the Windows dual boot setup.

This is exciting! I switched my desktop PC over to wayland as soon as 555 hit the repos. It's been an overall positive experience, with Plasma 6 really feeling performant and wayland-native, but there have definitely been these rough edges w/ plasma-shell occasionally freezing. Glad to see Nvidia getting these driver-level fixes so rapidly.

No game works with Proton/Proton-GE with these drivers.

Any progress forwards is a net positive, even if I personally have zero interest in using Wayland ever for various reasons.

But I am also seeing that with this news, a lot of people are blindly jumping into Wayland on GeForce expecting it to be flawless now, and then either being disappointed or denying that it's causing them problems when they inevitably find a major performance hiccup. Mostly some less experienced users in Discord servers I'm active in. I think we need to remember this is still years out from being a complete stand-in for X. Give it time.

I haven't run an upgrade from 555.58 yet, so I can't speak on whether or not 560 causes the aforementioned issues with Proton.
