For those interested in the Until Dawn remake from Ballistic Moon and PlayStation Publishing LLC, it's set to arrive on October 4th.

Much like other recent Sony releases on PC though, it will require a PlayStation Network account. The PlayStation Overlay hasn't been mentioned though which is why Ghost of Tsushima's online mode doesn't work for us, so it should run with Valve's Proton on Desktop Linux and potentially Steam Deck if you can pull the graphics down enough. I think it's safe to say all Sony PC releases will require a PSN account going forward.

The developers also shared various details on the PlayStation blog about what's new like overhauled visuals with Unreal Engine 5, new camera controls, a reworked prologue, new collectables, more customizable settings and new settings for accessibility and much more.

I always wanted to try it, so I think I'll have to give this one a go.

You can follow it on Steam.

Yes, without a PSN account you can't buy, play and download the game, if you life in a region without psn network access. You can't buy all new sony pc ports.

I live in a country with PSN network. I just couldn't make it work from a game on desktop (fedora)

I've been hoping this for launchers, extra accounts, DRM, microtransactions, etc. But unfortunately it seems like if they can push it long enough for a generation to have not known better, people will just start defending it because that's just how it normally is.

This is a very possible reality, sadly. I would love for PlayStation to be required to explain why an account is required outside of "Just because" and if it is required for other reasons, they should be required to demonstrate why it is required. It sounds to me like they just want to superficially inflate their "Total PlayStation User count."

I've seen it so many times, but I'm still baffled whenever someone militantly defends something scummy done by a really big corporation.
I've literally been downvoted on reddit by people defending Xbox saying Ads on the Xbox Dashboard are okay, normal and I just need to get with the times...

Remember the HELLDIVERS 2 case some months ago?
I don't remember who, but someone said like that they will not abandon it permanently and every new PC port of their games will probably have this. And here we go...
Disclaimer: I only buy creator-owned indie games with native Linux support, so I was never going to get this game to begin with.

With that said, I don't understand what's so bad about requiring an account? I understand that it makes the game unavailable in regions without PSN, but if you live in a region which does have PSN, what's so bad about logging in to an extra account?

Do you need to log in every time you launch the game (making it unplayable if and when they discontinue support)?

I can only speak to my own distaste for this particular service, here, but Sony's security track-record is particularly awful (and not mentioned in the link is that, if memory serves, at least some of the incidents listed involved sensitive data that was stored in plaintext, which only makes it worse).

Even if you'd only need to log in once for each new installation, you'd get locked out some time in the future. Not saying that you don't have to log in on every launch, I don't know about the specific arrangements.

It's interesting that some posters basically said that the breaches are okay because Microsoft had more incidents in the same time span.

It's sad, isn't it?

Quoting: PublicNuisanceLike others this is a hard pass for me. I refuse to bend the knee to PSN, Microsoft accounts, Uplay, EA, or any other account linking. I barely even buy from Steam these days. Plenty of games on GOG and Itch.io that interest me.

There are Sony released games on GOG (God of War, Days Gone, etc), but I am guessing that will stop now due to Sony forcing their secondary PSN account for DRM on PC games going forward. For a single player game, this makes no sense to force PSN and it should always be optional for multiplayer games.

I think this really screwed Sony over with Helldivers 2 and started its downfall when it locked out international players. Sony is just another greedy company who wants to inflate their PSN numbers to meet some shareholder nonsense.
Thanks both of you, those explanations make sense.
