Coromon is one of the better monster-taming / creature collecting Pokémon-likes that I've played and now the series is getting a new and rather different entry with Coromon: Rogue Planet. The first game is Steam Deck Verified and works great on desktop Linux too with Proton.

This time it's less of a standard Pokémon-like, and more of a turn-based tactical strategy game, with rogue-lite elements to make "an endlessly-replayable Monster Taming gameplay experience".

More about it: "Explore a variety of over 10 ever-changing biomes! Make tactical decisions on which paths to take as you navigate different events across the planet of Velua, weighing risk and reward. Each biome contains new and interesting challenges, as well as its own biosphere of Coromon. Procedurally-generated maps, encounters, and rewards ensure that every run feels fresh and new.

Unlock 7 different playable characters, each with their own story and playstyle! As you navigate your way through Velua’s diverse wildlands, you’ll find other trainers in need of your help. Join forces with them to permanently unlock them as a playable character, and complete milestone goals to discover their stories and gain new bonuses for every successive run!"

At its heart it's still very much a game all about taming those monsters though, with 130 of them this time around. Each having their own unique abilities. There's also going to be a meta-progression system to allow you to constantly upgrade your skills and abilities, along with upgrading a special hub area.

Something that pulled in my curiosity here is the mention of a mysterios interstellar spaceship you find the remains of. Each time you play you bring back new info and resources, and you're somehow working together with all other players to "progress a global narrative and unlock the secrets of the galaxy".

Dammit this is disapointing as hell. Coromon had one really good overworld and was fun to explore, going the easy way of random generation to create content removes half of what made it one of the best pokemon like experience (best in my opinion as pixel sprites are not outdone by any other i've seen and not making it looks like a random unity glued asset project).

And proper postgame was awaited by all for Coromon.
