PAX Aus have announced their 2024 line-up and it's absolutely packed with big names. Curiously, even Valve for Steam will be attending.
The line-up of exhibitors was revealed yesterday, September 17th, in an official post on the PAX Aus website. It notes that some big brands and companies will be there including Bethesda Softworks ANZ, Blizzard Entertainment, Devolver, FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, PC Game Pass, Playside Studios, SEGA, Steam, The Sims, and Ubisoft.
Quite exciting to see Steam listed with the event organisers noting "While on the topic of love, PAX Aus welcomes Steam for the first time ever. More on that when the show opens, you’re not going to want to miss it!"
Sounds interesting and they're clearly being a little coy. Pointing perhaps to something exciting coming, and a gaming event would be a good place to announce anything for a company like Valve.
Perhaps then, Australia might finally see a proper Steam Deck release? Even though it's not officially available, that hasn't stopped plenty of stores in Australia letting people buy it via importing it which many people have done so. However, getting it done officially would be awesome for the continued success of Valve's hardware.
Although, it might not be Steam Deck related, who knows, they might even use the time for an official Deadlock launch into a more open Beta without needing invites. Time to keep expectations in check huh?
The event runs from October 11th - 13th October, 2024.

Meanwhile, everybody else - from two-bit nobodies through to billion dollar multinationals - can release their wares in a tenth of the time that Valve Software can, and generate a profit in the process!

When you think about all the other lot doing handhelds, laptops and so on, they already have *all* the contacts and stuff in place to ship near worldwide for various types of hardware. Stuff like this takes time, but even so, it has been a bit too long for our Aus friends.

And shipping to Australia means official hardware support in Australia. So diagnostics, repairs, and replacements need a contact as well.

Gaben lives in New Zealand now right? We could definitely use a commercial where he shows off his Steam Deck. These ones are starting to grow old and the Internet demands that we get a 2024 reboot.

People say this whenever this topic comes up, but it's such a cop-out of a response.
I've seen everybody, from itty-bitty companies new to hardware all the way up to billion-dollar multinationals with years of experience, release hardware in Australia... Yet Valve Software, with all their assets, capital (money) and past experience (they've done hardware several times over the years) can't?
Give me a break.
This is laziness, nothing more.

That doesn't need to be a local presence - there are a lot of consumer electronics companies that ship their products overseas for diagnostics and / or repairs... Some of them do it for select issues, some do it for everything but it's common practice.
And it's not hard to organize that through a courier company; heck, I'm a former project manager - give me an hour and I could organize something that would be logistically feasible on the scale that Valve Software would need.

That's pretty funny.
For those not in Australia or New Zealand, Māori People and Kiwis have a very, uh, "unique", way of pronouncing certain words, largely due to their accent... Which Australians love to pole fun at, in part because of the never-ending rivalry we have with our friends "across the bay".
