Devolver Digital have just announced the proper launch of Big Fan Games, a new label that will work with indie developers to work on licensed content to make games from their favorite movies, comics, TV shows, and cult heroes and more.

They've already done collaborations in the past like John Wick Hex and Reigns: Game of Thrones. Although some are thanks to Good Shepherd Entertainment, which Devolver acquired back in 2021.

From the press release they note their team including people that have experience "working with games and entertainment properties like Dune, Star Wars, Blade Runner, Lord of the Rings, Evil Dead, Blair Witch, The Power Rangers and more".

Years and years ago, licensed games were a huge thing, they were everywhere. Movie tie-ins were often a given, but over time that was lost. So, it will be interesting to see what Big Fan Games along with indie developers can keep cooking up. However, the press release does stress that their goal is not for marketing tie-ins but for "fun and inventive games that stand on their own".

There's no doubt an endless list of movies and TV shows that would be prime settings for standalone games.

See the launch announcement for more.

Well, I alredy have the same expression every time I see them on my wishlist. Guess, it"s actually not a bad idea to get some more projects of the kind rolling. *thumbs up*

Licenced games used to be mostly crap as they had to be developed in a rush in order to stay close to the movie release date. Based on the more recent indie games and the press release, this doesn't fall into that trap.

Not that getting a license means that game still will be good (Gollum, Gollum), but at least given enough development time there's a chance that good games come out.
