KDE's end of year fundraiser is live

By -

If you appreciate the work from the KDE team on things like the Plasma desktop environment, maybe it's time to give them a little donation. KDE are looking to raise at least €30,000 with the total being updated each day.

This time around they've given the page a special Halloween theme with some short stories about issues with proprietary software. They're just a little reminder of what can happen like licenses being pulled away, companies using your work to train their AI, Windows updates being forced while you're working and more. Some truly horrifying stuff there.

From the fundraising page:

We're kicking off our 2024 end-of-year fundraiser just in time for Halloween!

Even if the spine-tingling horrors of the long dark night of Walpurgis are mostly imaginary, the sinister threats of predatory proprietary software providers remain all too real.

Fear not! We, the KDE community, will help you, your friends, family, company, and community banish all the creepy and insidious proprietary software that haunts your computers, phones, and household appliances.

But we can't do it alone! We need you to help us fight the good fight against the tech-ghouls from beyond. Use the form to donate any amount to our fundraiser (or become a regular donor to our community) and help us keep the dark forces of proprietary software at bay.

See all on their fundraising platform.

KDE Plasma is my favourite desktop environment, I would honestly feel a bit lost without it on Linux nowadays. It's nice on the Steam Deck Desktop Mode too. I just recently updated Kubuntu from 24.04 to 24.10 as well, getting all that Wayland goodness from a much more recent Plasma version has been fun to test.

I donate annually. I have it running on multiple systems including those my parents use. So not more than normal that they receive something in return.

KDE is basically the only entity that makes it into my "end of year donation spree" every single year. Maybe it's time to start throwing money early this year ^^

Lol. Loved the creativity of the "scary" proprietary software stories.

Of course, what's really scary is that they are true stories ...

I did enjoy the spooky stories. But I would prefer a bit clearer disclosure (preferably on the same page there) - whether these are likely hypotheticals or actual testimonies (with light editing for catchiness and mentioning the specific software). Does anyone know? I wouldn't want to share them with others under the wrong guise 😕.
