SKALD: Against the Black Priory is a retro-style party-based RPG set in a grim-dark fantasy world of tragic heroes, violent deaths and Lovecraftian horror. Released back in May, it now has full controller and Steam Deck support.

More about it: "SKALD: Against the Black Priory is inspired by roleplaying games of yesteryear, combining modern design and compelling storytelling with authentic 8-bit looks and charms.

Delve into a dark fantasy world, full of deadly creatures, tragic heroes, and lovecraftian horror for an epic retro-style adventure rich in exploration and tactical, turn-based combat.

Do you have what it takes to lead a company of broken heroes from the tainted shores of Idra to the gates of the Black Priory - and beyond?"

As of the latest update released September 30th it's been Steam Deck Verified, and the developers hooked up full controller support making it more accessible than ever. It also has a Platinum rating on ProtonDB so it's nicely playable with Valve's Proton on Linux platforms.

Main changes include:

– There are now a good number of different CRT-filters to choose from.
– The game now natively supports controller play on PC and Steam Deck.
– You may now use the mouse-wheel to scroll while mousing over menus and text fields.
– The game’s playability on Steam Deck has been vastly improved.
– You can now use the move-buttons / left joystick to deploy party members in the pre-combat party placement state (until now you’ve had to use the mouse).
– Pressing the “Swap Character” button (‘Q’ / RIGHT BUMPER) in combat, cycles through available targets.
– Character level cap is raised to 25.
– Certain enemies in the late game will now scale past level 20 making the end-game slightly more difficult.
– Added new Bard class. This includes a new school of spells..
– Added new Backgrounds: Entertainer, Laborer, Monastic, Nomad, Snake-Cultist.
– Fixed a bug where Horryn Guards roam around after you retake the city.

This game is pretty awesome, if you have been on the fence whether to buy it or not, I'd say definitely do it. The C64 palette pixel art is awesome and the music is great. Gameplay needs a few tweaks to make it harder at high level (it gets too easy), but overall its a great game.

This update and the sale on steam tempted me into buying it. Ive spent a couple hours on it so far and like it. The light shaders over the c64 pallet look good. There are about 7 different CRT filters or none if you prefer. Runs great on the steamdeck and desktop. On the deck, I only changed the right trackpad control to 'as joystick'. Good story so far, keeping me interested. The game sychs saves via steam which has made playing on deck and switching to a desktop or laptop seamless.
